Meet our Senior Web Designer…

For this week’s post I interviewed our Senior Web Designer – Daryl Walker-Smith.

Here’s what he had to say to the questions I posed:

How old are you?

Old enough to remember the Clangers and Chigley!

What’s your favourite film?

“A Matter of Life and Death” – an oldie but way ahead of its time. I’m a big fan of Powell and Pressburger movies.

What are your hobbies?

Movies (see above), Photography, Design (can that count even if it’s what I do for a job?) and I was recently introduced to Skeet Shooting (thanks to my Wife)

What’s your favourite food?

Espresso (well I class that as a food anyway)

When did you join Ebuyer?

November 2008 – where has the time gone?

Tell us about your education

I have a 1st Class BSc Hons and Founders Prize in Electronic Imaging and Media Communications (EIMC) from Bradford University

What has been your career highlight so far?

The new Ebuyer product pages! There’s always room for improvement but I’m really happy with the direction they’re taking now, (with a huge amount of help from our great development team!!) Oh – and introducing Ebuyer to the wonderful world of Twitter.”

What are you working on right now?

That’s top secret but it does involve a mobile phone whose first letter is ‘i’

What equipment and software do you use?

  • Mac Pro with more memory than sense
  • Large Wacom Intuos 3 tablet (I couldn’t live without one)
  • Two LG 24″ LCD monitors
  • Photoshop CS4
  • Illustrator CS4
  • InDesign CS4 (despite what the other Ebuyer designers say it absolutely rocks for print work)
  • Flash CS4 (although not as much these days now we’ve gone all jQuery)
  • Coda
  • The Hit List
  • Tweetdeck
  • Kuler
  • Every Web Browser Configuration known to man although I still prefer Firefox
  • More fonts, photoshop brushes and custom shapes than you could shake a stick at.

I also asked Daryl, what two items would he take to a desert island if he was stranded?

My large Intuos 3 Wacom tablet and my laminator

To conclude this interview I asked Daryl to give us a little information about himself…

After graduating at the ripe old age of 29 I landed a job with BBC Worldwide Interactive Learning where I spent 2 very happy years creating websites for the Open University to support their TV output. When I got married I decided to head back to sunny Yorkshire where I spent a year freelancing.

I then went on to work at Continuum Group in York as their “Interactive Designer”. The Continuum role encompassed website design, Kiosk design (for Museum interactives), photography (especially QTVR work) and print design for Continuum’s attractions.

Which brings me to the present – now I’m much closer to home at Ebuyer – and loving every minute of it!!!

It’s a bit of a cliche to say I’m a geek but generally I have a huge passion for all things design and all things web, so I feel very fortunate to be able to work at what I enjoy.
