What is Arlo?

Arlo is a wireless smart home security system which provides round the clock coverage.  Waterproof day / night cameras provide live stream HD video and two-way audio.  It is a system which can protect your home or business and allows you to monitor your sleeping child or over-active pet in real time.  And it is all managed from your smartphone, tablet or laptop.

How does it work?

The system uses the cloud for storage and wireless cameras.  The beauty of the Arlo system is how easy it is to set up.  It is completely wire free.  No complicated cabling or wiring is required.  NETGEAR claim you can have the system up and running within ten minutes of taking it out of the box.

The Arlo app is first downloaded and used to help set the system up. The base station connected to your broadband router and with a press of a button the cameras syncs with the base station.  They can then be positioned indoors or outdoors and are completely weatherproof.  Because there are no wires you can site the cameras wherever you wish.

Once the cameras are set up you download the app and you are good to go.

What does it do?

Arlo enables you to monitor your home or business premises.  Cameras can be set up at strategic points and will live stream coverage back to your phone.  Recordings are also kept in the cloud for seven days.  The cameras have motion sensors and operate both day and night no matter how dark the conditions.  Live footage and recordings can be viewed through the app and instant alerts are sent to your phone or email.

Why would I use it?

Monitor your pets

We’d all love to know what our pets get up to when we leave the house.  Now you can watch their antics in real time no matter where you are.  And it’s all recorded to the cloud to enjoy and share with friends and family.

Manage visitors

Expecting an important package?  Use Arlo to monitor the delivery.  Having work done on the house or garden while you are at work?  You can follow the workmen’s progress from Arlo’s live stream.

Just looked at the spec. Seems they’re powered by lithium batteries. So next question would be, what is the battery life?

Yes they use CR123 batteries. Which you can buy rechargeable versions.

They last for months as they only use power when they record or you live stream.

If you have them constantly recording for 2 min(max) then they will go down more. Bit like a torch, the more you use the faster the batteries need charging.

There are various parameters to choose.
