Information about new washing machines in general can be difficult to understand. And let’s be honest, it’s not the most interesting subject to take in. Stick with us, try and keep awake – and you might learn something AND save yourself money. In this post, we’ll give you advice on how to choose the perfect 8kg washing machine for you.
Is an 8kg washing machine big enough?
An 8kg washing machine is suitable for a family of four. It’s big enough to tackle a family wash without sending your electricity bill sky-high.
You can fit a duvet and a load of general laundry into an 8kg washing machine in one go. That’s the same as 40 shirts. We know, you don’t have 40 shirts…
Washing Machine energy
Washing machines are rated on how energy efficient they are. The highest grade is A+++ (this means a good use of water and electric – but they often cost a lot more). The lowest grade is A+
Water left in the drum
Right, the more water left in the drum after the cycle has finished, the more time and energy you’ll have to spend drying the clothes afterwards – as they’ll be wetter. That makes sense. The best washers leave about 50% of water in the drum, the average model leaves 55%.
Models usually spin anything from 1100 to 1600rpm. Faster is generally better, but faster is generally noisier too. No one wants the sound of a jumbo jet landing in their kitchen, but if you get the wrong model, it might seem like it’s happening! Generally, you’ll pay more for a higher-speeding model. The most popular models are the ones with variable speed.
Quieter is better, obviously. Washing machines are rated in decibels (db) and the general range at high speed is between 70 & 80db. HOWEVER, 80db is actually DOUBLE the noise of 70db. Just think about that for a second.
What does it cost you?
Most people have no idea how much it costs to operate an 8kg washing machine each year – but we presume it’s expensive. In actual-fact, most machines cost between £20 and £30 per year if you do one wash per week.
If you take a minute to look at the dial on your washing machine, you’ll see there are various programs, from intelligent load balance (which adjusts the water and total cycle time), sports programs (we’re not talking about Football focus!), anti-allergy programs, and special programs for babies and toddlers. You need to have a think about what you and your family really need.
Buying a machine with a rapid-wash option is cost effective. You can usually set these appliances to do a 15-minute wash.
Ideally, you should look for a model that has a 24-hour timer, as this makes your machine a lot quicker and easier to set. Lots of machines don’t have this feature though.
