The Right Tone
Smart home devices are becoming more popular than ever, with households across the UK now using voice activated virtual assistants every day. Although the automated voices of devices like Siri are now instantly recognisable, which celebrities would we most like to be the new ‘voice’ of the device?
We surveyed 2,000 UK adults to find out which celebrity voice was the most in demand, and which British regional accent the nation would prefer to hear their virtual instruction come from.
Morgan’s Number One
Morgan Freeman topped the list, with one of six (15%) choosing the iconic actor as the new voice of smart home devices. National treasures Joanna Lumley (8%) and David Attenborough (6%) made up the top three.
The top ten celebrities that the nation would like to be the new voice of smart devices are:
1. Morgan Freeman (15%)
2. Joanna Lumley (8%)
3. David Attenborough (6%)
4. Samuel L Jackson (6%)
5. Patrick Stewart (5%)
6. Brian Blessed (5%)
7. Sean Connery (5%)
8. Stephen Fry (4%)
9. Alan Rickman (3%)
10. James Corden (3%)
Joanna Lumley, the only woman to feature on the top ten list, was the top choice for respondents over 65 years old, and former POTUS Barack Obama was a top choice for 35 to 44 year olds, making it into the top three celebrity voices for that age group.
The Scottish and Home Counties were the top choices for the accent the nation would most like their virtual assistants to have, both receiving 13% of the poll. Yorkshire, (11%) Geordie (10%) and Welsh (7%) made up the top five accents.
What happened to Sean Bean?
Andrew Roberts Ecommerce Director at Ebuyer said: “With one of the most recognisable voices in Hollywood, it is no surprise that Morgan Freeman topped our poll, but it was interesting to see which other celebrities made the list, and how celebrities with regional accents fared. Our research found that over one in ten (11%) voted for Yorkshire as their chosen regional accent for their voice assistant, yet well-known Yorkshire celebrity Sean Bean received just 3% of the vote.
“The capabilities of voice assistants now mean that many can be updated to have different voices and accents – meaning you no longer need to be stuck with the autonomous voice of Siri or any smart device!”
