Every gamer is looking for the edge to beat their opponents these days, but what are the little things which can make a difference to your gaming performance? We’ve put together a selection of tips and secrets which can help you improve your chances of success.
Some may be just common sense, whilst others are things you probably never even considered to help you get ahead of your opposition. This list is aimed at those who are playing multiplayer games, but they’ll also come in handy for anyone playing those demanding single-player games which have you throwing stuff around your room in frustration…
1. Make your screen brighter!
Many games are purposely made to be ‘dark’ in order to let colours stand out and provide contrast. It may help set the mood, but it’s not perfect on the eye. If you’re playing an FPS and want to spot someone before they spot you, then adjust the brightness on your monitor or TV until the colours are easy to see, but don’t over-do it. Tweak the controls until the graphics stand out to their best. This process may make the game look slightly less pretty, but this is all about winning, not looking good!
2. Play with people who are better than you…
Most gamers play with and against players who have a similar skill level because it makes us feel better about ourselves – but this can hold you back. If you play against opponents who are inferior, you’ll see them gradually close the skill gap as they learn from you. But YOU, on the other hand will not see your skill level improve much as you’ll have no-one to learn from. If you play with gamers who are more skilled than you, you’ll learn from their strategies and be able to see how they operate. OK, you’ll probably lose quite a lot of games, but you WILL see the gap close as you rapidly improve. You’ll see how your opponents respond to your moves and how they can manipulate your actions in order to win.
3. Improve your timing
Timing is crucial if you want to be a successful gamer. If your timing is ‘off’ then you’ll never reach the heights you’re after so it’s important to ensure you work on your timing. But how do you improve your reflexes? Many games dare you to make a jump, tempting you to fall into that gaping abyss. Your reactions to circumstances need to be precise and well-timed – or you’re dead!
One game which is excellent for helping improve your timing is VVVVVV. Every screen in the game is about timing your flips and movements without hitting spikes or various obstacles. The difficulty level will help test and improve your timing.
4. How to solve puzzles in games
There are thousands of games which use puzzles as obstacles to make it difficult for you to advance in a game. You might have to find a key or a hidden door or collect certain items before you can move to the next stage of the game.
The majority of puzzles in games are based on the mould of Zelda games. Even Nintendo’s own games, like Metroid: Prime, borrow a lot from the puzzle-solving of the Zelda series. If you’re quite new to playing more hardcore video games, then playing Zelda games will help you experience and understand how the gaming industry create their puzzles. Once you understand the basics, you’ll be able to solve the puzzles more easily.
5. Listen to your body!
Your body can totally dictate your gaming success! Sounds a bit of an exaggeration, but it’s true. There are many gamers who play for many hours without food or drink, and the longer you go without sustenance, the more agitated your body will become. If you eat too much, then you’ll feel tired as much of your body’s blood is diverted to your digestive system – just like when you feel you need a nap after Christmas dinner! You need to eat healthily and not eat too much – then you can game to your potential.
Another thing to remember is to use the bathroom! You won’t be able to go in the middle of a game, and half of your brain goes towards using your bladder muscles to ‘hold it in’. Timing can be everything when you’re gaming!
So, there you have five ways to improve your gaming. Watch out for more tips soon!
