2020 has been an incredible year for video games, gifting us some truly memorable gems that will no doubt be favourites for a long time. We won’t mention the highly anticipated games which were meant to drop this year but unfortunately were pushed back… *cough* Cyberpunk 2077 *cough*.
Not only has there been a flurry of top titles, Nvidia also released their brand new RTX 30 Series graphics cards to take those titles to the next level. Now, with so many titles floating about, we’ve taken it upon ourselves to pluck out some of the best from the year.
Phasmophobia is one of the most popular games of the year, if not the most popular! Currently sporting a 10/10 rating on Steam it’s easy to see why, as the game absolutely nails all of the key elements of horror.
As a group of ghost hunters, you and your friends explore everything from houses to prisons, using your equipment and cunning skills to find the ghost amidst the growing suspense. The game is even able to listen to you through your mic, allowing you to call the ghost by name and taunt it to make a move on you.
Among us is without a doubt the breakout game of the year, despite it originally being released back in 2018. If you thought games like Fall Guys took the world by storm, Among Us has totally eclipsed that with it’s searing popularity, most of which it owes to memes.
The premise of the game is simple, a crew of up to 10 players is deployed on a spaceship and must carry out a series of tasks in order to win the game. However, one, two or three of those crewmates (depending which option you choose) are the imposters and must kill as many crewmates as possible whilst sabotaging the ship in order to win.
When a body is found or if a player finds another suspicious, they have the ability to call a meeting and plead their cases. As you can imagine chaos ensues as paranoia runs rife, often leading players to target the wrong person. Frustrating at times but undeniably fun, this 10/10 Steam rated game is hilarious, especially when playing as the imposter and using your cunning to manipulate a win.
Dead by daylight
This game is the perfect homage to classic slasher flicks such as Friday the 13th and Halloween, allowing gamers to step into the shoes of many iconic movie killers. Extension packs allow gamers to expand their game to play as everyone from Michael Myers to Ghostface.
The 1v4 game is more concise when compared with the likes of Phasmophobia in terms of game length and arguably delivers a much more intense thrill. Lower than the previous entries but still incredibly high, DbD has retained a solid 9/10 score on Steam.
Assassins Creed: Valhalla
Assassins Creed is one of the longest running and most popular game franchises to date, reaching lofty heights and undeniable lows throughout the series. After the success of Odyssey, one of the series better titles, AC had a lot riding on the release of the latest Viking-themed title. And boy did it deliver!
Complete with an expansive map and fluid gameplay, the game also features a flurry of easter egg-like content such as Thor’s hammer and the Excalibur sword to make the game that much more impressive. As gamers plough their way through the game, it won’t be long until all eyes are on the next title.
