Laser Printers: How do they work?

In a fascinating process, laser printers manipulate static electricity to attract toner to the paper being printed on. The device uses high-voltage circuits to give a positive electric charge to a photo-receptor drum, which has a laser reflected onto it that ‘draws’ the image of what is to be printed in negative charge. Positively charged toner is released, which ‘sticks’ to the negatively charged part of the photo-receptor drum. Paper with a negative charge is fed through the printer and the toner from the drum is pulled onto the sheet of paper. The paper then moves through rollers which apply temperature and pressure, which fuses the toner to the paper. Amazing!

Laser Printers: Best for the office?

In general laser printers are more expensive than inkjet printers, so represent a greater initial outlay – but, traditionally, this will balance out over time as they are a bit more cost effective than inkjet printers: Laser printers can produce more pages per replacement cartridge than an inkjet printer. You may find (dependent on make and model) that you get up to 10,000 pages from a single black ink cartridge, and around 7,000 pages from a colour cartridge.

You’re more likely to find an inkjet printer in a typical UK home, but that’s not to say laser printers aren’t used. However, generally speaking they are more ‘heavy duty’, so are much more appropriate for business use. A major benefit for a firm or an organisation is that laser printers are good at a productivity level due to fast print speeds, but also offer best quality printing for text-based documents. If you print a lot of text (and clean graphics or diagrams as opposed to photographs), a laser printer is the best choice.

Laser printers often come with only monochromatic printing, and their form factor is larger and bulkier than inkjet printers due to the mechanisms contained within. But there are some colour-capable models which, in terms of size, are relatively compact. So, essentially, you get the best of both worlds.

Laser Printers: Why HP?

Laser printers manufactured by HP share the same high quality that the world has come to expect from all of their other products, but there are additional reasons to consider. HP has a variety of great printing programs including HP ePrint, HP Smart and HP Instant Ink.

  • HP ePrint: Printers have a unique email address where you can send documents or images for printing. In effect this means you can print things from your computer from anywhere in the world – as long as you have an internet connection.
  • HP Smart: Print directly from your smartphone or tablet. You can even print images from your device’s camera roll.
  • HP Instant Ink: A simple subscription service where new toner cartridges for your laser printer are delivered straight to your door. Compatible printers monitor your supply levels and automatically order new toner when you’re running low.

HP has a printer (and services) to suit your needs, whether you’re looking for colour or black and white laser printing for the home or office. Check out our selection of the best HP laser printers, earlier in this article, or for more by various brands visit the Ebuyer website.
