What are HP ZBooks?

The HP ZBook is a laptop workstation which is marketed as a workstation but is similar in size and shape to a typical convertible laptop. So, externally, it doesn’t really look any different to any other laptop out there. However, internally it is different in that it is designed to run multiple apps with some of the most demanding memory and graphics requirements. Because of this, it has become a firm favourite with designers, engineers, animators and all types of creatives and professionals.

It was September 2013 when HP released the next generation of their mobile workstation. This was the very first range of theirs to use the Haswell generation of Intel CPU which provided the workstations with mobility. 2013 was also the first time that HP revealed the ‘Z’ branding and coincided with a brand new design for their workstations.

For those that want lots of power in a mobile workstation but don’t like the idea of lugging around a 17-inch computer, HP is also release two 15-inch mobile workstations (the ZBook 15 and 15v). HP’s 15-inch ZBooks are the highest selling mobile workstations in the world. The latest generation sees a 30% improvement in thermal performance, leading to a cooler, quieter experience. The 15 has a 4K DreamColor display with 600 nits and 1 billion colors. The ZBook 15 is easy to upgrade as well.

The ZBook design

Let’s take a good look at the design of the HP ZBook, which at first glance looks a lot different than its predecessor the Elitebook Mobile Workstation. Is it really so different? On further inspection, the overall shape of the ZBook is not too dissimilar to the Elitebook – at least from the side view and way the hinge is mounted within the main body.

The latest ZBooks feature thinner and lighter industrial designs which make them ultra-portable and cutting-edge. The HP ZBook 14 was the first workstation to be recognised by Intel as an Ultrabook, weighing just 1.62 kg and is 21mm thick. That really is thin! Within the ‘miniscule’ frame (and we mean miniscule in a good way!) are 5th Generation Intel® Haswell dual- and quad-core processor options, next-generation graphics technologies from NVIDIA and AMD. ZBooks are designed with the creative and technical professional in mind – and they need power!

HP monitored the market

After monitoring the market and looking at the needs of those in creative industries, HP wanted to supply mobile users with workstations that perfectly fitted their demanding work, whilst also looking the part with outstanding design.

ZBooks are built with precision-crafted machined aluminium to make them more durable and lighter for maximum portability. They are also designed with ultra-bright displays and have narrow bezels for more screen to size ratio.

They also have bright displays with narrow bezels for more screen to size ratio. From a safety point of view, Zbooks are also built to withstand being dropped on the floor! They also feature an innovative tool-free chassis for easy upgrades and serviceability. Everything has been designed with maximum convenience and longevity in mind.

But let’s go back to the design for a moment. The front of the Zbook has been designed to be at an angle which gives it a more lightweight appearance than other Zbook models such as the 8570w model. The rubber and satin metal finish of the lid really gives it a contemporary look which is right up there with the very designs on the market today.

Built to perform

For professionals who have demanding workloads, the last thing they need is for equipment which slows them down. They need speed and reliability, which are both in abundance in the HP Z Workstation. The range has been developed to take on even the most intensive tasks from wherever you happen to be. You can move confidently from working in the office to working on the train without missing a beat.

Lots of options

The needs of one professional are not necessarily the same as those of another, which is why HP have produced a workstation which comes in a variety of forms. It includes options which make it easy to find the one best equipped for your own working circumstances.

If you’re looking to run intensive programs or throw an all-nighter editing music and video, then the ZBook studio Mobile Workstation is going to be ‘right up your street’.

For those professionals who need a powerful system which is portable, then the HP Zbook Studio Mobile Workstation is perfect. It weighs just 4.4lbs, so there’s no danger of possible back and shoulder stress lugging it around!

Alternatively, there are convertible laptops such as the HP ZBook x2 Detachable Workstation which allow digital creators to interact with various projects in a much easier way. If you’re a creative, you want to work with tech which let’s you create with ease, while the ideas are there. The detachable workstation makes it a doddle to visualise your concepts. The tools you need are simple to access with just the click of a button. Everything has been designed to make your life easier. There are even 18 configurable Quick Keys which make mapping the functions of all your favourite apps a simple procedure.

Tested durability

Wherever you are and whatever you’re doing, your computer is going to take a few bumps along the way – that’s life! However, you won’t have to worry about those bumps and scrapes with the HP Zbook because it has undergone  more than 120,000 hours of military-standard tests. We’re not saying that it’ll withstand being run over by a tank, but these devices can withstand being dropped, fluctuations in temperatures, dust, sudden movement and lots more. It’s all part of HP’s goal to provide you with peace of mind.

Performance you can count on

How much power do you need? And wouldn’t it be great if you can decide yourself? Well, you can customise your HP Z Workstation by selecting from 7th generation Intel® Core™ or Intel® Xeon® processors, up to 32GB DDR4 memory at 2400 MHz, NVIDIA® Quadro® graphics, and upwards of 2TB of storage with dual HP Z Turbo Drives. These outstanding components will provide you with everything you need and more to work the most intensive tasks without breaking sweat!

Great anywhere

When HP designed the Zbook range, they did it with the phrase “Professionals don’t compromise when it comes to their work!” in mind. These notebooks are hard wearing and work hard. If you’re looking to do a long video editing session or connect multiple 4K monitors in a jiffy, then it’s a simple task. If you want to take notes by hand while you’re on the go, then it’s a doddle with the HP Active Pen. And, if you literally get hands-on with your latest project then fear not – some models have a touchscreen facility to make your life that bit easier!

You can make your work stand out from the crowd when you utilise the HP Active Pen which produces razor-sharp, hand-drawn graphics to add extra creativity to your presentations. You can even select one of HPs convertible options and turn your Z Workstation into a tablet in order to make it easier to take notes and illustrate.

Okay, so now you should know exactly what an HP ZBook is all about. It’s like having your very own superpower which fits inside a portable bag!
