Yesterday, Nintendo announced that the highly anticipated Nintendo Switch 2 will be released in 2025 and we got our first look at the console…
That’s all we got, no specs, no commentary, no firm release date. However, we do know for definite that we will get a closer look at the new Nintendo offering on Wednesday 2nd April at Nintendo Direct.
In the interest of full transparency, we should preface this article by coming clean that this article should have probably been titled: “Nintendo Switch 2 Announced: Everything We Kind Of, Sort Of, Maybe Know So Far From Watching The Trailer!”
The truth is that there is very little concrete information out there. Our team of gaming enthusiasts have reviewed the trailer and here’s what we have deciphered from it:
Oh, She Big!
The Switch 2 is going to be considerably bigger than the previous model. For a device already sitting on the larger scale of the handheld device spectrum, this decision has certainly raised some eyebrows. However, you will get a larger screen, larger controllers and an overall sturdier feeling device. Looking at the new trailer I must say, I’m here for it.
Take a look at this side-by-side comparison and see what you think…

A bigger screen also facilitates a better on-the-move multiplayer experience. Unlike the adverts, I have never actually played my Switch outside in a field with loads of friends. But still, having the option to do this (now with improved visibility) is much appreciated.
Kickstand Improvements
With the Switch 2, we are going to get a more substantial and built-in kickstand at the back of the device. This isn’t exactly groundbreaking innovation, but it’s a nice touch.
Users will have more flexibility to position their device exactly how they want it with reduced risk of it toppling over, safety first!
This simple innovation will also make multiplayer on the go a more enjoyable experience with the ability to play in more environments from more angles.
New Joy-Con Controllers
Like the main screen, the controllers will be bigger, but will they be better?
It’s no secret that ‘Stick Drift’ was a major problem with the Joy-Con controllers on the original Switch. Many users reported that their analogue sticks would independently move from side to side without input. This, for obvious reasons, caused a lot of frustration within the community. While we can’t confirm any new technology featured on the Switch 2, we imagine it would have been on the top of the list for Nintendo with this new instalment.
The keen-eyed viewers would have noticed that there is a mysterious new button on the controller. The left Joy-Con still has the screenshot button and on the right, we have the home button. Only time will tell the functionality of this new button but for now, we are just going to have to speculate. Comment below what you think the new button will do!
Finally, the trailer illustrates how the new controllers will magnetically snap into place.
Satisfying right?
Less Colour, Less Bold
The boldest design move from Nintendo has been to go less bold. The iconic blue and red design has been scrapped for a sleek all-black look with red and blue accents.
As a Switch purist, I’m sad to see it go!
