What is the AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX?

Built on AMD's latest GPU architecture, RDNA 3, the Radeon RX 7900 XTX is one of the world's first gaming GPUs to leverage chiplet technology. Never heard of it? Well, AMD have used chiplet technology extensively on their line-up of processors. It's what's made Ryzen processors such a breakthrough product. So, it's looking like AMD's trying to replicate Ryzen's success with Radeon graphics cards.

Compared to one 'monolithic' chip, each chiplet can be manufactured on its own process node. For RDNA 3-powered GPUs, AMD's using TSMC's latest 5nm process node for the core Graphics Compute Die (GCD) chiplet. Whereas the multiple Memory Cache Die (MCD) chiplets are on an older - and cheaper - 6nm node. This brings manufacturing costs down further, letting AMD be more competitive with pricing - compare the prices of the AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX and the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 for yourself!

For the fastest performance possible, these chiplets have to communicate with each other at lightning speeds. RDNA 3 facilitates this with a 2nd-gen Infinity Cache hooked up to a high-speed interconnect, delivering up to a whopping 5.3TB/s of bandwidth.

Tech-specs - RX 7900 XTX

The RX 7900 XT sits right at the top of AMD's latest Radeon RX 7000 series of graphics cards, with the RX 7900 XT launching alongside it. Unlike the last generation, however, the RX 7900 XTX isn't just a faster-clocked version of its smaller brother. It's not the same situation as last-gen's RX 6900 XT and RX 6950 XT, where clock speeds were the only difference between the two.

This time around, the RX 7900 XTX and RX 7900 XT are two very different graphics cards. While you'll find a 'Navi 31' chip at the core of either graphics card, the RX 7900 XTX boasts a full version of the chip with 96 Compute Units and Ray Accelerators. On the other hand, the RX 7900 XT's chip is knocked down to 84 Compute Units and Ray Accelerators. Video memory sees an increase too, with 24GB of GDDR6 on the RX 7900 XTX compared to 20GB on the RX 7900 XT. As you'll see in the gaming performance figures below, these differences all add up.

Power consumption and form-factor - RX 7900 XTX

Predictably, power consumption also goes up on the RX 7900 XTX. It's rated at a typical board power of 355W, with AMD recommending at minimum an 800W PSU to power an entire RX 7900 XTX-equipped PC. Though, given how power-hungry the latest 13th-Gen Intel Core and AMD Ryzen 7000 CPUs are, we'd recommending bumping up to a 751-900W unit. For comparison, the RX 7900 XT is rated at 300W. This additional power is put to good use, with the RX 7900 XTX reaching a 'game frequency' (the expected frequency under a typical gaming load) that's 300MHz faster than the RX 7900 XT.

As for how this power is delivered, AMD hasn't opted for the newest 16-pin PCIe 5.0 power connector - the one used on the RTX 4090. Instead, they've stuck to two good old 8-pin power connectors on the RX 7900 XTX. So, for those with older power supplies, you won't have to use an adapter. While it's not as enormous as the RTX 4090, the RX 7900 XTX will require a large computer case. AMD's reference design uses a 2.5-slot cooler that's 287mm long, though expect even bigger custom power and cooling solutions from the best gaming brands like PowerColor, XFX, and Sapphire.

Gaming Performance - RX 7900 XTX

As AMD's new flagship graphics card, the RX 7900 XTX was the main focus of the Radeon RX 7000 reveal event. There, they divulged some performance figures for the RX 7900 XTX, which we covered in our blog AMD Radeon RX 7000 Series GPUs - What You Need to Know. Since the event, they've released more benchmarks, one of which contains comparisons to the RX 7900 XT. AMD could've cherry-picked these benchmarks, of course, so look out for potential RX 7900 XTX coverage over on the Ebuyer YouTube channel. Nonetheless, AMD's choice of games includes many games, genres, and engines. So, these benchmarks should be a decent representation of the RX 7900 XTX's performance.

Rasterization

At a native 4K resolution and max settings (no raytracing), the RX 7900 XTX reached up to 190 FPS in Resident Evil Village, 139 FPS in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, 72 FPS in Cyberpunk 2077, and 100 FPS in Watch Dogs: Legion. Using the most demanding game for comparison, the RX 7900 XT got 60 FPS in Cyberpunk 2077, while the RX 6950 XT (AMD's last-gen flagship) got 43 FPS. Since Radeon RX 7000 Series graphics cards are so powerful, AMD uses "up to" in these benchmarks as they could very well be CPU-limited depending on the CPU they're paired with.

Raytracing

For maxed-out, ray-traced games (using AMD's FSR tech to reconstruct up to 4K), the RX 7900 XTX achieved up to 201 FPS in Resident Evil Village, 72 FPS in Dying Light 2, 62 FPS in Cyberpunk 2077, and 89 FPS in Hitman 3. Again using Cyberpunk 2077 for comparison, the RX 7900 XT got 57 FPS, while the RX 6950 XT got 42 FPS.
