RTX 4060 Ti with DLSS 3

RTX 4060 Ti 8GB vs RTX 4060 Ti 16GB

NVIDIA has announced that they're releasing two versions of the GeForce RTX 4060 Ti: an 8GB VRAM model is launching first in May, with a 16GB VRAM model coming later in July. There'll be a non-Ti version - the GeForce RTX 4060 - arriving in July too, rounding out the 60-class of RTX 40 Series graphics cards.

Apart from the amount of video memory, the RTX 4060 Ti 8GB and RTX 4060 Ti 16GB look identical on paper. They've both got the exact same number of CUDA, RT, and Tensor Cores, alongside 32MB of L2 cache and 288 GB/s of memory bandwidth. So, with the RTX 4060 Ti 16GB, you're just paying for extra video memory. Whether it's worth it or not is a tricky question.

A year or so ago, 8GB of VRAM might've been enough for 1080p gaming, which NVIDIA is positioning the RTX 4060 Ti for. In 2023, however, there's been a slew of high-profile releases that consume a massive amount of video memory even at 1080p. With these games, 8GB of VRAM could limit the card's ability to run higher-quality textures and ray tracing, whereas 16GB of VRAM would give you more than enough headroom. 16GB is the more future-proof option, but many games will run just fine on 8GB at 1080p.

RTX 4060 Ti vs RTX 3060 Ti

Unlike the RTX 4070, which has the same number of cores as last-gen's RTX 3070, the new NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 Ti actually has less cores than its predecessor. The RTX 3060 Ti is equipped with 4,864 CUDA Cores, 152 Tensor Cores, and 38 RT Cores, while the RTX 4060 Ti has 4,352 CUDA Cores, 136 Tensor Cores, and 34 RT Cores.

RTX 4060 Ti Gaming Performance

Despite the reduced core-count across the board, the RTX 4060 Ti's more advanced architecture gives it the edge over the RTX 3060 Ti. According to NVIDIA's gaming performance figures for the RTX 4060 Ti, it's on average 1.15x faster than the RTX 3060 Ti - and that's before you factor in DLSS 3's performance boost. The RTX 4060 Ti is looking to be a great choice for high-refresh 1080p gaming.

Take a look at the Steam Hardware Survey, and you'll see it's dominated by the likes of the GTX 1060 and RTX 3060. In fact, four of the five of the most popular graphics cards reported by the survey are 60-class cards. So, we expect the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 Ti to be an extremely popular choice for mid-range PCs.

RTX 4060 Ti Power Consumption & Form-Factor

When you pair the Ada Lovelace GPU architecture with a 1080p performance target, you get a super-efficient graphics card. The 8GB version of the RTX 4060 Ti is rated at a TGP (effectively the card's power consumption) of just 160W, while the 16GB version comes in a smidge higher at 165W. For context, the top-of-the-line RTX 40 Series graphics card - the RTX 4090 - has a whopping 450W TGP. So, the RTX 4060 Ti's power draw is reigned in to a much more reasonable level.

NVIDIA say both the RTX 4060 Ti 8GB and RTX 4060 Ti 16GB draw 140W on average in a typical gaming load, and that an RTX 4060 Ti-equipped gaming PCs require 550W PSUs at a minimum. NVIDIA's reference design for the RTX 4060 Ti uses a PCIe 5.0 power connector, though there's an adapter in the box for a 1x PCIe 8-pin cable. A few aftermarket graphics cards, including some above, just use a 1x PCIe 8-pin power connector.

A 160W TGP is incredibly low for a modern graphics card and, as such, the RTX 4060 Ti doesn't need that big of a cooling solution. Most RTX 4060 Ti graphics cards feature a two-slot design, though their length can vary. So, before you buy a RTX 4060 Ti, make sure it'll fit in your computer case.
