RTX 4070 Tech-Specs

Like the rest of the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 40 Series line-up, the RTX 4070 is based on NVIDIA's latest GPU architecture, codename Ada Lovelace. This third-generation RTX architecture delivers up to twice the performance and power efficiency compared to the previous generation with new streaming multi-processors, up to twice the AI performance with fourth-generation Tensor Cores, and up to twice the real-time ray tracing performance with third-generation RT Cores.

What's more, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 40 Series graphics cards like the RTX 4070 are built using a TSMC 5nm process node, which is smaller and more efficient that the Samsung 8nm process node used on NVIDIA GeForce RTX 30 Series graphics cards. In short, a smaller process node allows NVIDIA to cram more transistors onto their chips, resulting in more processing power and less power consumption too.

At the heart of the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 graphics card is the AD104 GPU - the same chip featured in the RTX 4070 Ti - in addition to 12GB of GDDR6X video memory on a 192-bit interface. However, the RTX 4070 sees a reduction in the number of cores across the board. While the RTX 4070 Ti is equipped with 7,680 CUDA Cores, 240 Tensor Cores, and 60 RT Cores, the RTX 4070 is reduced to 5,888 CUDA Cores, 184 Tensor Cores, and 46 RT Cores.

Interestingly, this is the exact same number of cores as the outgoing RTX 3070. Despite these similarities on paper, the architectural improvements, faster clock speeds, and higher memory bandwidth of the RTX 4070 gives it a noticeable increase in performance over the RTX 3070. In a real-world scenario, it's most comparable to RTX 3080 - and that's before you factor new, exclusive technologies to the RTX 4070 like DLSS 3.

RTX 4070 Power Consumption

What's more impressive is the RTX 4070's power consumption. Even though it's faster than the RTX 3070 by a large margin, the RTX 4070 is more efficient. The RTX 3070's TGP - effectively how much wattage the card can pull from your power supply - is rated at 220W, while the more advanced, more performant RTX 4070 is rated at just 200W. And according to NVIDIA, the RTX 4070 consumes just 186W on average while gaming.

NVIDIA's reference design of the RTX 4070 draws its power from 2x PCIe 8-pin cables or a 300W-or-greater PCIe Gen5 cable. When you take image reconstruction and frame generation technologies out of the equation, expect the RTX 4070's raw rasterization performance to be comparable to an RTX 3080. It's even faster when real-time ray tracing is enabled, however, on account of the RTX 40 Series' new technologies like Shader Executing Reordering.
