RTX 4080 vs RTX 4080 SUPER - What's SUPER?

NVIDIA's SUPER branding is used to denote an updated, or 'supercharged', version of an existing product. The original RTX 4080 launched back in late 2022, and it wasn't until the start of 2024 that we'd see the refreshed RTX 4080 SUPER. Generally, SUPER cards aren't that big of a departure in terms of specs from their originals (that's reserved for Ti cards). What tweaks and improvements SUPER cards do have, however, make them the all-round better product, all while retaining a similar price point.

RTX 4080 SUPER Specs

At the heart of the RTX 4080 SUPER is NVIDIA's AD103 GPU, the same chip found in the regular RTX 4080. It's a more-unlocked version of the chip, mind you, with 10,240 CUDA Cores as opposed to the RTX 4080's 9,728 CUDA Cores. This places the RTX 4080 SUPER in second place out of the entire RTX 40 Series line-up. It's only bested by the almighty RTX 4090, which boasts a ridiculous 16,384 CUDA Cores. But this, of course, comes with a hefty price tag. So if you're after a high-end graphics cards for high-refresh 4K gaming that won't obliterate your bank account quite like the RTX 4090 would, the RTX 4080 SUPER is worth considering.

According to NVIDIA, the RTX 4080 SUPER is 1.4x faster than last-generation's RTX 3080 Ti in the latest, most graphically games, and this is with DLSS Frame Generation disabled. Enabling DLSS Frame Generation (exclusive to the RTX 40 Series) makes the RTX 4080 SUPER twice as fast as the RTX 3080 Ti. As the name implies, DLSS Frame Generation generates entirely new frames in-between existing ones using AI, amplifying your games' frame rates for a smoother visual experience. RT Cores and Tensor Cores enjoy a slight boost, too, from 76 RT Cores and 304 Tensor Cores on the regular RTX 4080 to 80 RT Cores and 320 Tensor Cores on the RTX 4080 SUPER. This will help the card's real-time ray tracing and AI performance. Both cards share the same 16GB GDDR6X memory configuration on a 256-bit wide memory bus, though the RTX 4080 SUPER ships with the world's fastest GDDR6X chips clocked at 23 Gbps.

RTX 4080 SUPER Power Consumption and Form Factor

Despite the RTX 4080 SUPER's higher core count and faster memory, it's got the same power requirement as the regular RTX 4080. The RTX 4080 SUPER is rated at a TDP of 320W which, while high, is impressive given the card's performance level. This is a powerful, 4K-capable card, but it's not going to be maxed out all the time. Expect the RTX 4080 SUPER to consume an average of just 246W while gaming, according to NVIDIA. And to power an entire RTX 4080 SUPER-equipped gaming PC, NVIDIA recommend a 750W power supply at minimum. Some factory-overclocked models from add-in card providers may require more power, so keep that in mind.
