What is the RTX 4090?

The GeForce RTX 4090 takes the crown as NVIDIA's fastest graphics card from the reigning champion, the RTX 3090 Ti, making it a worthy successor to the RTX 3090 as well. What's more, the card comes equipped with 24GB of super-fast GDDR6X. DLSS 3 on the RTX 4090

This breakthrough technology not only reconstructs supported games from a lower resolution input to a higher resolution output, say 1080p to 4K, it also leverages AI to create additional high-quality frames. Importantly, this frame generation technique is run on the new Optical Flow Accelerator, exclusive to RTX 40 Series GPUs.

DLSS 2 vs DLSS 3

RTX 4090 is a blisteringly fast card already, but DLSS 3 enables real-time raytracing at ultra-high resolutions and frame rates. For example, the RTX 4090 runs Cyberpunk 2077's new 'Overdrive Mode' at 20 FPS. DLSS 2 bumps it up to a playable 60 FPS, while DLSS 3 reaches a mind-blowing 90 FPS, perfect for a high refresh rate gaming monitor.

Boost Gaming Performance

Even when you're CPU-bound DLSS can boost performance. Say you're playing a simulation-heavy game, with highly detailed physics and an expansive open world. This places a heavy load on the CPU and can 'bottleneck' an RTX 4090's performance. With DLSS 3, however, the RTX 4090 can leverage AI to generate higher frame rates.

NVIDIA Reflex

As DLSS 3 generates new frames in-between existing frames, it introduces a slight hit to input latency. This is balanced out by NVIDIA Reflex, however, which is now incorporated into DLSS 3. NVIDIA Reflex synchronises the CPU and an RTX 4090 for low system latency.

By combining the AI-powered DLSS Super Resolution and DLSS Frame Generation, DLSS 3 delivers a massive boost to performance.

RTX 4090 Tech-Specs

At present, the GeForce RTX 4090 is the top-of-the-line RTX 40 Series graphics card, featuring 16,384 CUDA Cores running at a boost clock of up to 2.52GHz. This is a beastly bit of kit, so you've got to ensure your system's prepared for it.

With a 450W TDP, an RTX 4090 system requires an 850W PSU at minimum. As such, we'd recommend a 1,000W unit to account for other high-wattage components, such as next-generation CPUs. It can be powered by a 1x 450W or greater PCIe Gen 5 power cable, or 3x PCIe 8-pin cables with the included RTX 4090 power connector adapter.

NVIDIA's reference design for the RTX 4090 uses a three-slot cooler, but we're seeing many aftermarket cards opt for a four-slot cooler. You'll need a sizable computer case to install an RTX 4090, so double-check your case's dimensions against a card's.
