What is a motherboard?

A computer's motherboard is the component within your computer case that connects every other component together. Physically, a motherboard is nothing more than a printed circuit board, in all cases being the biggest circuit board in your chassis. Its size allows for the housing of an incredible number of electronics, connections, and ports, all of which enable the other components to interact, work in tandem, and create a functional computer. On top of facilitating this communication, your motherboard is responsible for allocating the power required for each component, loading your operating system, and directly housing both your processor and RAM. Your motherboard is also home to various other ports and connections that are necessary to connect any outside peripherals you might need for a professional gaming experience.

How to choose a motherboard

With nonsensical naming schemes and technical jargon filling up most motherboard descriptions, working out how to choose a motherboard can be tricky. To help simplify the process, we've broken it down into three main considerations.

Firstly, you'll need to take into account the size (form-factor) of your chosen model. You'll want to choose a motherboard that'll fit the same standard as your computer case; this is especially important if you're looking to upgrade rather than build a rig from scratch as not every motherboard fits every chassis. ATX, Micro ATX, and Mini ITX are all popular form factors with a large variety of cases that support them.

The next big thing to consider is component compatibility, specifically a motherboards CPU socket and chip set. While components such as RAM will usually fit any motherboard, processors are only ever compatible with motherboards of the same brand. For example, if you want an AMD processor, you'll need to purchase an AMD motherboard. Chips sets on the other hand will dictate what other computer components are compatible with your motherboard. Be sure to check both of these in the product description to make sure all your other components are compatible with your motherboard. Finally, be sure to check the number of component slots present on the motherboard. You want to make sure you have enough room for extra RAM, the right number of USB ports, and any other bonus peripheral connectors you might want. On top of this, it never hurts to look at a motherboard's performance and general temperature control.

Which is the best AMD motherboard?

While motherboards are necessary for every computer, when it comes to gaming, you need a motherboard with high-quality, reliable components. A suite of high-end features will allow you to push your system's capabilities to the max and run triple-A games at their maximum settings.

Fortunately, the overwhelming majority of AMD motherboards use the AM4 socket, replacing the AM3+, FM2+ and other outdated sockets no longer supported. Having one unified socket makes it easier than ever to choose an AMD motherboard for your system. AMD motheroards with the AM4 socket support AMD Ryzen 3, 5, 7, and 9 CPUs. However, AMD Ryzen Threadripper processors are too monstrous even for AM4 and required their own separate sockets. TRX40 motherboards are built exclusively for 3rd generation Threadripper CPUs.

When it comes to popular AMD motherboards, there is little else that can beat the ASUS ROG STRIX B450-F Gaming II ATX Motherboard. Boasting excellent power distribution and an optimised thermal design, good AMD motherboard don't get much better than this.

If you're after cheap motherboards that still offer great performance, AMD's 'A' and 'B' boards (e.g., A520, B550) sit in their lower to mid-end budget offerings. If you want stability and performance while overclocked, AMD's 'X' boards (e.g. X570) are engineered for this exact purpose. Expandability is also extremely useful for gamers. Keep a keen eye out for boards with plenty of RAM and M.2 SSD slots for future upgrades.
