Best AMD Computer Motherboards
Choosing the right motherboard is crucial for maximising your AMD processor's performance. When shopping around for top AMD motherboards, consider options from brands like ASUS, MSI, and Gigabyte - all of which we stock at ebuyer. These brands are known for producing the best AMD motherboards, with robust build quality, expandability, and overclocking capabilities. The best motherboards for AMD should cater to your specific needs. Gamers, for example, will want the latest in Wi-Fi tech to help mitigate packet loss and lag when playing online, whereas professionals will instead favour rows and rows of PCI slots for add-in cards. Explore the best motherboard for AMD right here and find the perfect match for your setup.
If you're in the market for a new AMD motherboard but aren't quite sure what you need, start your search by looking at the socket, chipset, and form-factor.
AMD Motherboard Sockets
The socket of an AMD motherboard is where you install the CPU. In this socket there are hundreds of contact points, which match those found on the bottom of a CPU. These contact points, however, are laid out in a specific pattern. Certain CPUs only slot into certain CPU sockets as a result. So, it's crucial you choose an AMD motherboard with a socket that's compatible with your CPU, otherwise you won't get very far in your build.
Fortunately, figuring out which type socket you need is easy. AMD support two types of socket in the consumer market segment: socket AM4 and socket AM5. As you can probably guess, socket AM5 is the newer of the two. Socket AM4 is used by processors from 2017's original Ryzen 1000 Series all the way up to 2020's Ryzen 5000 Series.
It wouldn't be until the release of 2022's Ryzen 7000 Series (Ryzen 5 7600, Ryzen 7 7800X3D, and so on) that AMD would introduce a new socket, AM5. Evidently, AMD squeeze a lot of mileage out of their sockets and motherboards; AMD have said they plan to support AM5 to at least 2025. If you're unsure as to which socket your AMD processor is compatible with, check the processor's spec-sheet.
AMD Motherboard Chipsets
That said, even if an AMD motherboard has the same socket as you CPU, it doesn't necessarily mean they'll be compatible. You must also look at the chipset of an AMD motherboard. It's the chipset that dictates a motherboard's capabilities, from how many USB devices it can handle at a given time to overclocking support and, most importantly, what generation of CPU it's compatible with.
For example, let's take an Ryzen 5000 Series CPU, like the popular AMD Ryzen 5 5600. While it'll work out-of-the-box in a socket AM4 AMD motherboard with the newer B550 chipset, one that's based on the older B350 chipset will require a BIOS update - and you may not have an older CPU to performance this update with. It can be a bit confusing, so it's best to double-check what chipsets your processor supports.
Whenever there's a new Ryzen series, a new chipset line-up is launched alongside it, too. To avoid as much complication as possible, we'd say it's wise to choose a motherboard that uses a chipset that launched at the same time as your processor. If you've got an Ryzen 7000 Series CPU, for example, then an AMD motherboard with either an A620, B650, or X670 chipset is your safest bet.
A, B, and X-Series AMD Motherboard Chipsets
Next, let's explain the key differences between these chipsets. AMD motherboards with 'A'-series chipsets are your more basic, budget-oriented option. While they lack support for manual CPU overclocking and often come with the bare-minimum number of ports and slots, these cheap AMD motherboards are perfectly adequate when paired with an entry-level AMD processor in a home office PC.
If you're looking to build a gaming PC, on the other hand, then it's best to step up to an AMD motherboard with at least a 'B'-series chipset. Not only do these AMD motherboards support overclocking, but they're also equipped with more robust power delivery solutions and heatsinks. This allows your processor to boost to and sustain faster frequencies. Boards with A-series chipsets are lacking in this area and, as a result, can hold back the performance of high-wattage, gaming-grade CPUs. Plus, B-series chipsets better support the latest PCIe technologies, with a greater number of current-gen PCIe and M.2 slots.
At the top of the stack are AMD motherboards with 'X'-series chipsets, which boast all the bells and whistles. Most people will be well-served by B-series chipset; they're a great middle ground between price and performance. X-series chipsets are more for the enthusiast user who's trying to squeeze as much performance out of their top-of-the-line hardware. These AMD motherboards are armed with the best voltage regulator modules for some serious overclocking potential and the utmost stability.
AMD Motherboard Form-Factors
And, of course, you want an AMD motherboard that'll actually fit in your computer case. AMD motherboards (and Intel motherboards for that matter) come in a variety of sizes. In order from smallest to largest, they are: Mini-ITX, Micro-ATX, ATX, and Extended-ATX.
By far the most popular form-factor of AMD motherboard is ATX, which lines up with the fact that ATX mid-tower cases are extremely popular, too. Micro-ATX AMD motherboards rank highly as well and tend to be a bit cheaper than ATX AMD motherboards. Although they're primarily designed for use in Micro-ATX cases, Micro-ATX AMD motherboards are supported by many ATX cases.
As they've got more space to work with, larger AMD motherboards typically feature additional ports and slots. So, if you're looking to slot in several M.2 solid-state drives and PCIe add-in cards, then you may instead prefer an ATX AMD motherboard.
