Is AMD Ryzen 5 Better Than Intel Core i5?

At first glance, it wouldn't be wrong to assume that a modern Intel Core i5, with its 14 cores and 20 threads, is straight-up better than a 6-core/12-thread AMD Ryzen 5. These core counts aren't wrong per se, but they don't tell the full story.

As explained in more detail over on the Intel Core i5 page, Intel processors use a hybrid CPU architecture with a combination of big Performance-cores and little Efficient-cores. P-core have the biggest impact on performance, as the name would suggest, while E-cores are more for power saving in less demanding workloads.

Out of an Intel Core i5 14600K's 14 cores, only 6 of them are P-cores. The rest are all E-cores. AMD's current line-up of processors, on the other hand, are made up of only these big, high-performance cores, though they'll be moving to a hybrid design in the future as well. So, when you break it down, a 6-core AMD Ryzen 5 isn't too dissimilar to a 14-core Intel Core i5, which is more like a 6-core processor at heart.

Otherwise, when you look at productivity and gaming benchmarks available online, the latest Intel Core i5 and AMD Ryzen 5 processors trade blows with each other. Intel perhaps has a slight performance advantage in certain workloads, but it's at the cost of higher power consumption, in turn leading to more heat.

Why Should I Buy an AMD Ryzen 5 Processor?

AMD Ryzen 5 represents AMD's mid-range processor offering. Even though there's AMD Ryzen 7 and AMD Ryzen 9 above it, AMD Ryzen 5 is no slouch where performance is concerned - especially for the price.

In fact, if we had to sum up AMD Ryzen 5 processors in one word, it'd be value. You get a lot of performance for your money when you buy an AMD Ryzen 5 processor: 6 cores, 12 threads, fast out-of-the-box clocks, and more, all while delivering industry-leading energy efficiency.

If you're just looking to game without breaking the bank, an AMD Ryzen 5 processor is all you really need. It's only when you want to push those ultra-fast frame rates in CPU-limited games, or live-stream your gameplay simultaneously without a hitch, that you need to step up to an AMD Ryzen 7 or 9. For the average user who's got a mid-range graphics card from either NVIDIA, Intel, or AMD themselves and doesn't have a whole lot to spend on their CPU, it's hard to go wrong with an AMD Ryzen 5 processor.

And what's so great about buying into AMD's ecosystem is that they support their motherboards for a long time, longer than their competitors. AMD is sticking with the current AM5 platform (which was introduced alongside 2022's Ryzen 7000 Series) until at least 2025. So, when games stop running as well as on the CPU-side as they used to, you can always upgrade your old AMD Ryzen 5 processor to a newer, higher-tier model, without needing to replace your motherboard.
