Is AMD Ryzen 7 Better Than Intel Core i7?

An 8-core/16-thread AMD Ryzen 7 processor may sound impressive at first, but when you compare it to Intel's latest 20-core/28-thread Core i7 offerings, it starts to lose some of its appeal. If Intel's got more than double the number of cores with their Ryzen 7-equivalent processors, you may be asking yourself why you'd ever go AMD. Well, while these core counts aren't technically wrong, they don't paint a complete picture.

Crucially, 12th-Gen-and-later Intel processors are based on a hybrid CPU architecture with both little Efficient-cores and big Performance-cores. When you look at an Intel Core i7 14700K's spec-sheet, for example, you'll see that only 8 of its 20 cores are P-cores. The rest are all E-cores which, for the most part, don't affect overall CPU performance that much. It's very much the P-cores that matter most, as the name would imply.

On the other hand, AMD processors consist solely of big, high-performance cores. So, when you factor out these little, efficiency-focused cores, Intel Core i7 and AMD Ryzen 7 processors aren't that different from one another core-wise.

Why Should I Buy an AMD Ryzen 7 Processor?

AMD Ryzen 7 isn't the highest tier of AMD processor. There's also AMD Ryzen 9 (equivalent to Intel Core i9), with up to 16 cores and 32 threads. If, somehow, this still isn't enough cores and threads for your needs, then AMD's more workstation-centric Threadripper processors may be of interest. Armed with up to 96 cores and a mind-blowing 192 threads, these AMD processors absolutely rip in multi-threaded workloads, hence the name.

For the average gamer who's looking to play the latest triple-A releases, or the budding content creator who doesn't have a budget they can blow through, an AMD Ryzen 7 is a more practical, affordable option that'll still be powerful enough in most cases. In fact, we've already gone as far to say that a recent AMD Ryzen 5 processor, like the AMD Ryzen 5 7600, is all you really need for gaming. Most game engines aren't architected to take advantage of tens of tens of cores.

AMD Ryzen 7 Processors for Gaming and Content Creation

That being said, the extra couple of cores of an AMD Ryzen 7 processor can seriously help in those more CPU-intensive games, which have become increasingly common since the start of the current console generation. The Last of Us: Part 1, Act 3 of Baldur's Gate 3, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor - these games will hammer your processor, especially when you're trying to hit higher than 60 frames-per-second.

If you've got a high refresh rate gaming monitor, an AMD Ryzen 7 processor paired with a high-end graphics card from NVIDIA or AMD themselves will ensure you get the most out of it. AMD's X3D V-Cache processors, like the AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D, are among some of the best gaming processors money can buy, all while being remarkably energy efficient for their performance.

What's more, an 8-core AMD Ryzen 7 processor makes an excellent choice for anyone who's thinking about getting into live-streaming and content creation.
