Pick up a spare laptop charger

Having your laptop's battery die on your whilst working on the train or in a coffee shop is frustrating to say the least, especially when you've forgotten to pack a charger. This scenario can be easily avoided with a spare laptop charger. So you're never without battery, it's a good idea to buy an extra laptop charger and tuck it away in your laptop bag. We stock a range of laptop chargers from all the leading brands and have adapters that can be used with most laptops.

Can I use a lower wattage charger on my laptop?

Yes, provided that the lower wattage charger's voltage is the same as your original charger. Charging your laptop at a lower wattage than it was designed for is not ideal, but it's not harmful either. Accordingly, the laptop will charge at a slower rate, and it'll lack the power to run its hardware at the highest frequencies. Too high of a voltage can do some serious damage to your laptop, however.

Can I use a higher wattage charger on my laptop?

Similarly to how you can use a lower wattage charger with your laptop, you can also use a higher wattage charger with your laptop. Again, it's not the charger's wattage you should be strictly look at, but rather its voltage. So long as the voltages of your original charger and the new laptop charger match, the higher wattage won't damage your laptop.

Think of it this way. It's not the charger that 'pushes' power to the laptop, but rather the laptop that 'pulls' power from the charger. As a result, the laptop will never pull more power from the charger than it can handle; hooking a laptop up to a higher wattage charger is perfectly safe. So, if you're on-the-road for work and are carrying both a business and a home laptop, then you can charge both devices with one high-wattage laptop charger to lighten your load.

Travel lighter with USB-C charging

It's worth noting that your laptop likely has more than one way of charging. In addition to standard barrel-style chargers, most 2-in-1 and thin-and-light laptops nowadays can be topped up over a USB-C port. In fact, many manufacturers have phased out these old barrel-style chargers from their devices entirely in favour of USB-C as it's a much more modern, universal standard. Not all USB-C ports support power delivery, mind you, so check your laptop's specification.

For the most part, you can plug any old decent USB-C charger into a laptop with support for USB-C power delivery and it will work without worry - the same can't be said for barrel-style chargers. Hook a 100W USB-C charger up to a 65W laptop, for example, and it'll automatically charge at the system's default wattage. USB-C charging is extremely convenient as you can buy one high-wattage USB-C charger and use it to charge all your USB-C-powered devices, from your laptop to your smartphone, rather than carrying around multiple dedicated chargers.

As of now, the USB-C power delivery specification is rated for up to 100W of power, which is more than enough to charge the majority of power-sipping consumer laptops out there. Gaming laptops, however, still require hefty power bricks and barrel-style chargers to supply their high-wattage CPUs and discrete GPUs with enough juice.
