    Laptop docking stations (0 products)

A docking station is one of those pieces of kit we see being used more and more often in the office. Which is understandable given that more office workers are using laptops at their desk. But docking stations are also ideal for home use especially as many households are ditching the traditional desktop PC.

Why do I need a laptop docking station?

A laptop docking station is a laptop accessory which can help you simplify and streamline your set-up, while also providing you with additional ports to connect devices to.

Think of a laptop docking station as a port multiplier. While your modern, thin-and-light laptop might only have a handful of USB-C ports, a laptop docking station can feature multiple USB-Cs, full-sized HDMIs, ethernet jacks, SD card readers, and more, effectively giving you a fully-fledged desktop experience.

Attach all your peripherals - keyboards, mice, monitors, and so on - to a laptop docking station, rather than directly to your laptop, and you'll be able to disconnect from and reconnect to your set-up with just a single cable.

How do I choose a laptop docking station?

    USB-C laptop docking stations

First and foremost, you want to choose a laptop docking station that's compatible with your laptop. Most laptop docking stations nowadays, including those on this page, connect to a laptop via a USB Type-C connection, otherwise known as USB-C. So, if your laptop is equipped with a USB-C port - which became widely adopted in 2016 - then you're good to go.

    USB-A laptop docking stations

A USB-C port is oval in shape, while USB-A is rectangular. For those who don't have a USB-C port on their laptop, we do stock some USB-A laptop docking stations. These won't be as feature-rich as USB-C laptop docking stations, however, as USB-C is a more modern connection with greater bandwidth and capabilities.

    Thunderbolt laptop docking stations

If you've got an Apple MacBook, then you'll want a Thunderbolt laptop docking station. Apple equips their MacBooks with Thunderbolt ports in place of standard USB-C ports. Thunderbolt uses the same physical connection as USB-C, so they both look identical. However, while you can plug USB-C devices into Thunderbolt ports, you can't plug Thunderbolt devices into USB-C ports.

    Power Delivery

To get the most functionality out of a laptop docking station, you want to hook it up a laptop's USB-C port that has support for power delivery. A laptop docking station that also has power delivery will then be able to charge your laptop with up to 100 watts' worth of power. This eliminates the need for a dedicated laptop charger, further simplifying your set-up.

    Ports

And, of course, you want to make sure a laptop docking station has enough ports for your needs. If all you're after is a few more USB ports, you might want to take a look at our range of USB hubs instead. With more than just USB ports, laptop docking stations can offer a lot more functionality.
