What is a Celeron laptop?

Celeron is the Intel brand name for the less-powerful microprocessor models which are targeted as lower-cost PCs. Typically, they offer less performance per clock speed compared to the Intel CPU lines such as the Pentium or Core brands. However, as Celeron are at the cheaper end of PC, they still have a valid use and suit a certain type of user.

What tasks can it do?

A Celeron laptop is perfect for basic and light tasks. The Celerons are processors which are ideal for multimedia use and word processing. They are also good for surfing the internet, doing homework and using Google apps. If you need to do tasks such as graphic design, gaming or video editing then you really need a laptop which has core i5 or above. But for students, a Celeron laptop is a perfect entry level device where you can get stuck into researching and writing essays.

Processors

When it comes to Intel processors (and for any brand of processor), there are two main figures which you come across all the time: Clock speed and Cores. What do they mean? Well firstly, this figure tells you how many operations a processor can do in a single second. The higher the number, the faster the computer.

The other figure you will see is for the number of cores. Usually, laptops (and desktop) chips have two or four cores (known as dual-core and quad-core). Some of the latest models can have up to eight cores. Your computer is able to handle more tasks, the more cores it has without slowing down. If you are the sort of person who likes to work or play with lots of programs running, or you have tons of web browser tabs open, then you will see a noticeable difference in performance if you have more cores. But do not get drawn in to comparing the number of cores between different Intel processors (such as the Intel Atom v Intel Core i5) as the cores themselves are completely different and thus cannot be compared.

Intel Celeron and Pentium

Celeron and Pentium processors maybe at the bottom of the Intel range but they have greatly improved in recent years. As long as you stick to basic tasks such as word docs, admin and online browsing, you will be fine. They are also ideal as an emergency back-up laptop, as they are reliable, portable and cheap when compared to other laptops.

What do the numbers and letters mean at the end of Intel Core I processors? This used to be quite a complicated thing to explain, but thankfully, the manufacturers have made life a little easier. The i chip model can be divided in to five parts, and each provides more information about the processor in your laptop: Core i3, i5, i7, i9 tell you roughly where your device fits into the Intel range. What this means is: Core i3 are usually the least expensive and powerful processors with i5, i7 and i9 representing large steps up in performance.

Gaming on a Celeron laptop

Celeron laptops are not for gaming, but there are still a variety of games which you can play on them. For example, if you have an Intel Celeron with 8GB of RAM, you can play games such as: Valorant, CSGO, Hitman 1/2/3, Trackmania, The Sims, SimCity and Vice City, to name a few.
