Is a 34" Monitor Too Big?
If you're used to using a relatively compact 24" monitor (which you probably are, seeing as it's the most popular size of screen), a 34" monitor will feel massive. These displays offer an incredible visual experience, whether it's for business or leisure. However, you seriously need to consider if you've got enough room for one. People are often surprised by how much difference the extra three inches of a 27" monitor make; a 34" monitor is on a whole other level. So, before buying a 34"-and-above monitor, measure out your desk. You may even want to cut out a 34-inch piece of cardboard to get a better idea of how a 34-inch monitor will fit in your setup.
Does an Ultrawide Monitor Need to be Curved?
Given the enormous widths of some of these displays, a curve is much more necessary on an ultrawide than it is on a standard monitor. Without a curve, these extra-wide monitors would be too unwieldly for most people's desks. It's why you'll find that practically all the ultrawide monitors in our range have some degree of curvature to them, denoted by a 'R' (radius) value. The smaller this value, the tighter the curve will be. For example, a 1,800R curved ultrawide monitor has a noticeably less pronounced curve than a 1,000R display. A curve also improves the visual experience by keeping more of the monitor in your peripheral vision.
Can an Ultrawide Monitor Replace Two Monitors?
While you can achieve much of the same effect as an ultrawide monitor with a couple of ordinary monitors, ultrawides have one distinct advantage: no bezels. A 32:9 'super' ultrawide is equivalent to two 16:9 monitors side-by-side. With the latter, however, you'll have an ugly bezel splitting up your visual experience. No matter how slim the bezels of today's monitors may be, they're unmissable when smack-dab in the middle of your vision.
So, as you imagine, a bezel-less ultrawide is far superior for gaming and watching movies. The same can be said for productivity, especially for more creative workloads. An ultrawide monitor will afford you more screen real estate for your lengthy video editing timelines, for example. There's also the fact that unlike with a multi-monitor setup, you won't have to worry about colour accuracy, uniformity, and brightness with an ultrawide as it's all one panel. That said, some people prefer having distinct displays for individual tasks - one monitor for Excel, another for email, and so on - rather than multi-tasking.
Is an Ultrawide Monitor Worth It for Gaming?
For those who like to play story-driven single-player games, it's hard to beat the immersion factor of a 34"-and-above monitor or, better yet, a curved ultrawide that fills your peripheral vision. Once you've witnessed the visual splendour of a high-fidelity AAA game running on one of these displays, it's difficult to go back to something smaller.
Do note, however, that not every game will support an ultrawide monitor. From laptops to monitors to TVs, most displays on the market are in a widescreen aspect ratio, like 16:9. In turn, most games are designed primarily with 16:9 displays in mind. It's not guaranteed that they'll support ultrawide aspect ratios - at least not out of the box. If you're willing to do a little bit of tinkering (as is in the spirit of PC gaming), there's likely to be a community-made ultrawide mod for any game.
It's not just if a game supports ultrawide monitors or not, either. What's more impactful to the user if is a game actually takes advantage of the wider aspect ratio. Check out our blog Ultrawide Monitors for Gaming to learn more.
