Can You Use a PlayStation 4 Controller on PlayStation 5?

While it's possible to connect a PlayStation 4 controller (DualShock 4) to a PlayStation 5 console, you'll only be able to use it in PlayStation 4 games via backwards compatibility. PlayStation 5 games aren't compatible with PlayStation 4 controllers, only PlayStation 5 controllers (DualSense).

Can You Use a Xbox One Controller on Xbox Series X/S?

Yes, last-generation Xbox One controllers are compatible with current-generation Xbox Series consoles, like the Xbox Series X and S. They'll work flawlessly in games from either generation, meaning you can continue using an old Xbox One controller on a new Xbox Series console - perfect if you've accumulated a number of controllers over the years.

Do note that Xbox One controllers lack the dedicated 'Share' button of Xbox Series controllers, though this button's functionality can be replicated via a simple shortcut.

What's more, Xbox Series controllers are backwards compatible. So, if you ever want to go back to your Xbox One console, you can do so while using an Xbox Series controller. Neat, huh?

Do Xbox Controllers Work on PC?

There'll always be those who swear by keyboard and mouse, no matter the game. But for many, some game genres simply play better on a controller's analogue sticks, analogue triggers, and D-pad, like platformers and racers.

Fortunately, hooking an Xbox controller up to a gaming PC is just as easy as it is on a console. Given that Xbox falls under Microsoft, an official Xbox controller will instantly be recognised by Windows - no drivers or downloads required.

And, most importantly, Xbox controllers are 'XInput' devices. XInput is by far the most popular application programming interface (API) used in games for handling controller inputs. So, if a game says it supports a controller, you can expect an Xbox controller to work without fuss.

Do PlayStation Controllers Work on PC?

Yes, but support can be hit or miss. PlayStation controllers, like the most recent DualSense, will be recognised by Windows as generic 'DirectInput' devices. DirectInput by this point is an old, legacy API, which XInput has largely replaced. Most of today's games only feature compatibility for XInput.

In games that don't natively support PlayStation controllers, you can use third-party software or Steam's input mapper to emulate a PlayStation controller as an Xbox controller. While useful, this isn't the kind of plug-and-play functionality most people are looking for when buying a new controller.

What's the Best Console Controller for PC Gaming?

If you want a console controller that'll just work on PC as well, go for an Xbox controller. It's also worth noting that most PC games show Xbox-style button prompts, regardless of what controller's plugged in. Some games let you switch between Xbox and PlayStation-style button prompts, but they're few and far between. It's quite evident that Xbox controllers are better supported on PC.

That being said, you of course have to take into account the design of the controller itself. Many people strongly prefer the symmetrical stick placement of a PlayStation controller, so much so that they'll install and configure software to get it working under Windows. Not to mention the shape and feel of the controller in your hand, too. While an Xbox controller may win when it comes to plug-and-play functionality, really, it all comes down to personal preference.
