What is CCTV?

The acronym CCTV stands for Closed Circuit Television - so, essentially, it's a television broadcast which is privately transmitted only to a limited (closed) number of viewers. CCTV technology was originally developed by German scientists during the Second World War, and was later used by the Americans during the testing of the atomic bomb. However, modern uses are far less military and much more domestic.

The term CCTV has become synonymous with security within society. CCTV networks have commonly been used to detect and deter criminal activity on our streets, but now the cost of this technology has put it well within reach of individual households and businesses.

How does CCTV work?

At the most basic level CCTV works like this. A camera covers a particular position or area, and captures images. These images (and sometimes audio too) are transmitted live to a monitor (this could be a standalone device, or through your TV, or a software app on your phone, for example). There is also likely to be some sort of recording capability so that the images and footage captured can be preserved.

Why do I need a CCTV system?

These days keeping your property safe and secure - whether that's your home or your business premises, and the items contained within - is very important. When you install a CCTV system it offers you peace of mind but also, if you do find that your premises or your workplace has been the unfortunate victim of crime, you are likely to have imagery or footage which will be of use to police investigators, legal teams and for insurance purposes.

Putting together CCTV kits

The first thing you need to do is consider which CCTV cameras you need, and we have plenty of options to solve any security issues. Our range includes CCTV cameras with different specifications including day and night vision, remote control (from mobile devices such as smartphones, tablets or laptops), sound activation and much more. Many CCTV systems and cameras are wireless, which makes things much easier as they are quick and painless to install, and quick to set up.

Latest CCTV systems for the home

The CCTV industry has moved on in leaps-and-bounds in recent years, and the latest CCTV technology gives you the convenience of being able to capture everything in full HD video. Motion detection activation now means that you won't be recording for hours if nothing's happening, and the system won't be activated by bugs, dead leaves or rain. Many CCTV systems now allow you to sync mobile devices and monitor your home or business while on-the-go. Some systems come with Google Assistant compatibility. Once set up, all you need to do is say "Okay, Google, show me the back door" - and will instantly be able to view it on your mobile. But all systems can be controlled by an app on your smartphone which allows you to monitor your property no matter where you are. There are also video doorbells available which, essentially, can perform as a limited-level CCTV system.
