What is a network card?

A network card - sometimes referred to as a network interface card (NIC for short) or a network adapter - is the interface between your computer and a network. In order for a computer to be able to communicate with other computers (or connect to the internet), it needs to have a network card installed. The card is usually found inside the computer, and connection to it / from it may be wired or wireless. Some computers offer both wired and wireless options. Internal network cards are usually connected directly to the motherboard through an expansion slot such as a peripheral component interconnect (PCI) or similar.

What's the difference between wired and wireless network cards?

The difference is in the way the card connects. A wired network card requires an Ethernet cable to be plugged into it. These days many computers, particularly laptops, come with wireless network cards already installed. These cards are able to communicate with a wireless router or network device without the need for any cabling to be plugged in. The benefits of wireless technology are well known, but in the case of having a wireless network card in your laptop it means you will be able to move freely around your home, office or other environment and still be connected to the internet without physically plugging in.

How do network cards work?

The network card uses a transceiver to prepare data, which transforms parallel data into serial data. Each network card has a unique address, assigned by the manufacturer, which means that it can be specifically identified amongst all the network cards in the world. Network cards have various settings which can be configured, including hardware interrupts (IRQ), I/O address and memory address (DMA).

To make sure that your computer and the network are compatible, the network card must be compatible with the internal structure (data bus architecture) and have a connector suitable for the kind of cable used.
