What are network devices?

Most networks are small (home, home office and sometimes even the professional environment) and even larger networks can be divided into smaller segments to make the management easier. Smaller segments are set apart from the larger network by a device specifically designed to filter data and help the network's efficiency. These are known, broadly speaking, as network devices.

Network devices, sometimes called networking hardware, are the physical devices required for communication and interaction between other pieces of hardware on a computer network. Network devices can include things like: a Hub, switch, router, bridge, gateway and modem.

What do these devices do?

Network devices are responsible for:

* Controlling traffic: Large networks need to filter and isolate data traffic.

* Connectivity: Network devices can connect different types of networks using different types of network protocols.

* Addressing: Splitting up the network with connectivity devices provides an actual (physical) example of delivering actual data to the right destination through the IP address's network ID and host ID.

Setting up a network

These enable broadband data to be transmitted using the existing wiring in the home so setting the network up is so very easy. You plug one powerline adapter into the wall socket adjacent to your router, and connect the router with an ethernet cable. Then you plug the other powerline adapter into the wall socket adjacent to, say, your desk or workstation, and run an ethernet cable to your PC or laptop (or other device). It's that simple!
