What's a PoE Switch?
As the name implies, Power over Ethernet (PoE) switches not only transmit data over an ethernet connection, but also power. Most, if not all, of your networkinggear require some sort of power to function. So, rather than hooking these devices up to separate power and data sources, you can streamline your set-up with a PoE switch.
Why Do I need a PoE Switch?
Power over Ethernet isn't a new technology. For decades, it's been the backbone of office IT infrastructure. But with the explosive rise of smart, internet-connected devices in the home (smart doorbells, cameras, and so on), the use of PoE has seen a resurgence in recent years among consumers, too. When you've got all these smart devices to connect to power and the internet, the resulting cable clutter gets a bit out of hand. A PoE switch helps with this, merging power and data into one cable.
PoE Switch in the Office
PoE switches handy in both the office and the home. Image, say, a call centre, where every employee's desk has a Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) phone. With a PoE switch, you wouldn't need to run power and data cables everywhere - just ethernet. This greatly simplifies an office's networking infrastructure, making the deployment of equipment easier and its maintenance more manageable.
PoE Switch in the Home
This can be applied to the home, too. Say, for example, you've got a two-pack security camera system to set up. Without a PoE switch, you'd have to run power and data to either camera. One can be tricky enough already in some cases, never mind the other. What if there's an ethernet jack near where you want to position the camera, but not a power outlet? A PoE switch can also help to expand your network's range.
