What is a Power Distribution Unit?

As a network becomes increasingly complex and the burden placed on a server more strenuous, ensuring there's a reliable supply of high-quality power is vital to a business's function.

With today's business, we rely heavily on our networking infrastructure and an unexpected loss of power or outright failure in hardware can have catastrophic consequences for businesses and data centres, including loss of your business's critical data.

If you're looking to invest in an uninterruptible power supply, an essential component of any set-up is the power distribution unit, or simply referenced as 'PDU' for short.

A PDU works in tandem with a UPS. In the event of a loss of power, the former doesn't produce power, that's the job of the UPS. Rather, the PDU is at the receiving end, the last piece of equipment needed for reliable power delivery. Its job, as the name implies, is to distribute power to all your business's equipment - servers, rack-mounted switches and more.

At a fundamental level, think of a PDU as a more advanced and reliable power strip you'd find in your home. However, enterprise-grade equipment like a server is designed for round-the-clock operation, with a higher power requirement too. It would be seriously unwise to hook up critical equipment to a lowly, no-frills power strip.

Engineered to endure numerous incoming connections from high-powered equipment, a PDU prevents an over-loaded circuit and helps recycle power to increase the performance and efficiency of a network.

On a higher-end PDU, a user can access and monitor it remotely to save time and simplify management. From switching on-and-off each connection's power for performing maintenance, to measuring the electrical consumption of a piece of equipment.

Installing and upgrading a PDU is straightforward, so networks can be expanded quickly and easily when required.
