An Uninterruptible Power Supply provides an emergency back-up power source in the event of the mains supply either failing or dropping. There are of course several reasons why we may need back-up power; notably a break in the electricity supply or hardware failure. Either event can be catastrophic if we are using our PC or running a server but a UPS that kicks in immediately can prevent any damaging loss of data.

Uninterruptible power supplies are essential for the reliable operation of servers, as well as computers in applications like data centres, hospitals and other locations where even a momentary loss of power can cause plenty of damage.
The UPS takes its power from the mains supply which effectively charges its battery. When the power is cut the UPS switches to battery mode to feed power to the connected devices.
