Do label printers just print labels?

A label maker is a sound investment whether you're a business owner or just someone who likes to keep things neat, organised and tidy. We stock label printers with features to make your tasks easier, including USB label printers. In the range above, you'll find the best on the market today, that don't just print standard labels, but come with hot features such as the ability to create shipping, folder, address and barcode labels; built-in keyboards; auto-numbering; and the ability to print at super-fast speeds. If you've been hunting for a dependable and robust printer, you've come to the right place.

A label printer is an indispensable tool for e-commerce logistics. You need shipping labels to send packages, and a label printer helps you work efficiently and flawlessly. There are two main types of label printers on the market...

Types of label printers: regular vs. industrial

Regular label printers are quite small and compact, in fact they are designed so that they can be carried around in the workplace. They are fine if you need a small number of labels. Ideal for the office or small business. However, if you need to print a high volume of shipping labels, it is better for you as an online retailer to choose an industrial printer.

Thermal label printing: direct thermal vs. thermal transfer

When it comes to label printing, there are two main techniques: direct thermal and thermal transfer. The direct thermal printing does not use ink, it uses heat-sensitive media, whereas thermal transfer uses a heated ribbon to for the print.

The labels produced by direct thermal printing do fade over time (they are affected by sunlight etc), but this is not seen as a problem for shipping labels because they have a relatively short lifespan. The lifespan is essentially from your shipping address to the delivery address.

Resolution & print speed

There is a big demand for label printers, hence there are lots of products on the market to choose from. This means that there are different price ranges and different quality standards. With label printers, it is not a bad idea to look at resolution and print speed as a marker. On most labels there will be a barcode, so the quality has to be pretty good, or the barcode might not be readable. So, resolution needs to be good. When it comes to print speeds, a regular label printer is slower than an industrial label printer, so it depends how important that is to your business?

Connections

The majority of label printers connect to your computer via a standard USB cable, although some connect via serial port (RS-232), parallel port or ethernet. Others connect using Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, which gives you the convenience to move your label printer around.

At Ebuyer, once you've placed your order, we like to get your order processed as quickly as possible and we have super-fast delivery options available.
