What makes the best gaming headset? Nowadays, there's plenty of high-quality gaming headsets to choose from, and here at Ebuyer we've got the best in the business. Whether you're after the best gaming headset for PC gaming, console gaming, or streaming, here's what you should be looking for when buying a gaming headset.

Sound Quality

It's all well and good if a gaming headset has an eye-catching design and customisable RGB lighting. But it's the sound quality of a gaming headset which could mean the difference between hearing all the little audio cues of a game (as the game's developer intended) and not knowing your enemies' position in the slightest.

A gaming headset with above-average sound quality can give you a distinct advantage in competitive multi-player games. For instance, you'll be able to hear footsteps around a corner, firefights in the distance, and grenades ricocheting off walls - all of which will help you get the drop on your foes.

Most gaming headsets are tuned bass-heavy out-of-the-box, which works well enough in games. However, the software of the best gaming headsets feature a number of pre-set audio profiles or, better yet, a fully customisable equalizer to tweak the headset's sound to your liking.

Microphone Quality

It's the microphone which ties the whole gaming headset package together. After all, not only is it important for you to hear your teammates, but also for your teammates to hear you.

In competitive titles where there's no room for error, effective voice communication is essential. Pick up a gaming headset with a crystal-clear microphone and you'll be able to call out where an foe is hiding, coordinate strategies, and alert your teammates when you're about to throw a flashbang. And even when you're just shooting the breeze in-between matches, you don't want to be that one person whose crackling, popping microphone keeps interrupting the call.

The majority of gaming headsets are equipped with a boom-style microphone, which flips up out of the way when not needed. Rather than fumbling around for a mic mute switch, some gaming headsets feature quicker and more intuitive flip-to-mute functionality, too. If you're looking to record higher quality voice overs, podcasts, and live streams, check out our range of excellent standalone microphones.

Comfort

Given that you'll be wearing a gaming headset for potentially hours at a time, comfort is key. In fact, we'd say comfort is just as important as sound quality. If a gaming headset is uncomfortable to wear for any period of time, it doesn't really matter how good the sound quality is.

When shopping for a new gaming headset, keep an eye out for models with not only plush earcups, but also a plush headband. Speaking of, the headband should have a decent amount of adjustability to comfortably fit your head. And the material of the headset's earcups makes a surprising difference, too. Leather and faux-leather may feel the most luxurious, but in those sweaty summer months, the breathability of a microfibre mesh fabric is a blessing.

Noise Cancellation

Take a look through our range and you'll notice that most gaming headsets on the market feature over-ear, closed-back designs, lending them excellent passive noise cancellation. This'll help block out a lot of background noise, but not all of it. Passive noise cancellation isn't the same as active noise cancellation (ANC), which does supress nearly all noise - whether that be the sound of an air conditioner, background chatter, or traffic outside an open window.

ANC analyses the frequencies of background noise using an array of small microphones built into the headset. Then, the headset's ANC chip generates the inverse of these frequencies to cancel out the noise. You'll pay a premium for ANC, but it's worth it if you want to tune everything out and focus solely on a game's audio.

Connectivity

The wireless technology of today's wireless gaming keyboards and mice is just as fast, if not faster than an ordinary wire. When audio is involved, however, there's a lot of more data to transmit. As such, the audio latency of wireless gaming headsets is typically a bit behind that of wired gaming headsets. For many, it'll be hard to notice the slightly higher latency of a wireless gaming headset, especially if it's using a dedicated 2.4GHz receiver, but it's there. In story-driven single-player games, this latency is perfectly acceptable. It's in competitive multi-player games where you may want to still consider a wired gaming headset for the lowest possible latency.

Nevertheless, it's hard to beat the convenience factor of a wireless gaming headset. If you're a console gamer, you'll appreciate not having to sprawl a wire from your TV to your couch. And for those who like to get up in-between matches and, say, top up a glass of water, with a wireless gaming headset, you can do so while still chatting and listening to your teammates. Though, do keep in mind you'll have to keep on top of charging a wireless gaming headset, and that they're more expensive than their wired counterparts.
