Why Should I Buy a Streaming Microphone?

Between capture cards, key lights, and Stream Decks, it's easy to be overwhelmed by all the streaming equipment on offer. However, when you're just beginning your streaming journey, the most important bit of kit to invest in above everything else is a standalone, high-quality microphone. While a gaming headset's microphone is often better than what you'd find on a webcam, it's still far, far behind that of a standalone microphone when it comes to audio quality.

You may not think it at first, but the audio quality of your stream arguably has more of an impact on viewer engagement than its video quality. People can, for the most part, tolerate if a stream isn't the highest resolution or bitrate. Most are watching on small smartphone screens anyway. A low-quality microphone, on the other hand, isn't a minor annoyance - it's enough to actively turn people away from your stream. No matter how good your gameplay or commentary is, no one is going to willingly choose to sit through a stream punctuated by eardrum-piercing pops and cracks.

Microphones for Gaming, Podcasting, & More

Of course, nothing's stopping you from using one of these steaming microphones even if you aren't a streamer. If you're mainly a multi-player gamer, you may want to pick up a standalone microphone to have better, clearer communication with your teammates, or perhaps you're thinking about starting a podcast. Standalone microphones typically feature multiple pick-up patterns, with 'cardioid' picking up sound from the front of the microphone and rejecting it from the side and rear. This is ideal for a podcast set-up with multiple microphones in close proximity.

To ensure you get the best quality out of your streaming microphone, you'll want to mount it to a microphone boom arm. These clamp to the edge of a desk and suspend your microphone above it. This will help minimise sounds and vibrations from the desk reaching your microphone, such as the click-clack of mechanical keyboard. What's more, a microphone arm will allow you to position the microphone right in front of your face, meaning you can reduce to microphone's sensitivity and, in turn, pick up less background noise.
