Our server hard drives are available in a huge range of storage capacities, offering you more flexibility in the configuration of your server. Solid-state drives (SSDs) can also be found on this page in addition to traditional hard drives (HDDs), providing faster and more efficient performance. Whether you're building or upgrading a server for shared digital content storage, bulk back-up, or a cloud/web environment, there's a wide variety of HDDs and SSDs to choose from for all server applications.

Desktop Hard Drives vs Server Hard Drives

Technology-wise, there's not a whole lot of difference between your ordinary consumer hard drive and a server hard drive, if any at all. Rip open a consumer HDD and compare it to a server HDD, and they'll look pretty much identical. NAS HDD, surveillance HDD, enterprise HDD - a hard drive is a hard drive, whichever way you slice it.

Endurance & Reliability

That being said, you wouldn't want to use a consumer-grade hard drive in an enterprise-grade server. A server isn't like a desktop or laptop. It's not as if you shut a server off at the end of a work day. Barring maintenance, a server - and its HDDs - are up and running for almost twenty-four hours a day, three hundred and sixty-five days a year.

Today's consumer hard drives boast decent duty cycles, but this assumes the drive's only operational for a few hours a day. These drives wouldn't hold up for nearly as long in a server, the wear-and-tear of constantly being read from and written to would shorten their lifespan considerably.

On the other hand, server hard drives are built to a higher standard to withstand a server's round-the-clock operation. Server HDDs go through more rigorous testing during their development and feature wider shock, vibration temperature, and humidity operation ranges, all typically backed by longer, more comprehensive warranties.

Performance

What's more, the performance of server hard drives is often higher than consumer hard drives. While most consumer HDDs today max out at 7,200 RPM - 5,400 RPM drives are common, too - server HDDs can go up to 10,000 RPM or even 15,000 RPM. That's over twice the speed, meaning data can be pulled from the hard drive's spinning platter that much faster. When you've got terabytes' worth of data to sift through and process on the daily, as is often the case with a server, these fast drives can make a big difference.

However, 10,000 RPM and 15,000 RPM hard drives consume more power, generate more heat, and produce more noise than your ordinary consumer hard drive, which is why you don't see them in consumer devices. In a server, which itself is mounted in a rack cabinet in a server room, it's all much more manageable.
