Internal Hard Drives (4 products)

If you need more computer storage capacity in your current system, or if you're building a machine from scratch, a new internal hard drive is an essential component. In fact, an internal hard drive is an easy and relatively low-cost way to upgrade any computer's storage.

Internal Hard Drive Storage Capacities

When you've got several internal hard drives to choose from, your first consideration should be storage capacity. We stock internal hard drives in capacities of up to 20TB, which equates to a massive amount of storage. This size will perhaps only be of interest to enterprise users, or those who work with enormous file sizes in the creative industries. But for home users and small businesses, 2, 4, and 8TB internal hard drives are more than adequate to store a large amount of data, files, and documents.

2.5" & 3.5" Internal Hard Drives

Another important consideration is the size, or form-factor, of a hard drive. Of course, it's necessary to buy an internal hard drive that'll fit in the hard drive bay of your computer. As mechanical storage devices made up of moving pieces, it's important for hard drives to be correctly installed, otherwise even slight jolts and vibrations can damage them. Smaller 2.5" hard drives are most commonly used in portable devices such as laptops, whereas desktops have room for larger 3.5" hard drives.

Why Should I Buy an Internal Hard Drive?

Solid-state drives may have hard drives beat when it comes to raw performance, but hard drives aren't completely obsolete just yet. Yes, they've been wisely usurped by solid-state drives as the primary storage device in all but the most budget-oriented desktops and laptops. However, that's not to say you can't run a hard drive - or multiple hard drives, for that matter - as your computer's secondary storage device.

Secondary, Back-Up Storage

If you take a look through our range of hard drives and solid-state drives, you'll find that the storage capacities of today's solid-state drives max out at around 4TB, whereas internal hard drives can reach up to 10TB, 20TB, and even further beyond.

A hard drive proves great as a secondary storage solution, as in, one that operates alongside your solid-state drives, particularly for storing back-up copies of your larger data. While it's definitely best to install your computer's operating system (as well as all your must-have programs, apps, and games) on a solid-state drive for the snappiest performance possible, it's perfectly fine to shove all your other data on a hard drive. After all, it's not as if you need your sizable music or movie library occupying a lot of space on your solid-state drive - space that could otherwise be used by actual software that'd benefit from the solid-state drive's increased performance. Divvying up your computer's storage like this will help free up room on your solid-state drive so you can, for example, squeeze a huge AAA title onto it and enjoy the fastest loading times.

Maximise Storage

These extra-large hard drive capacities also help you make the most of the physical storage space in your computer case or network-attached storage (NAS) server. For example, even though your NAS server may only have six hard drive slots, that's still potentially over a hundred terabytes of storage capacity if you take advantage of these 20TB hard drives. And even if you stick just one of these hard drives somewhere in a small form-factor computer case, it will give most people more storage than they'll ever need.

Price-Per-Gigabyte

Hard drives are a matured technology, they've been around for decades by this point. Their prices have gradually fallen with each passing year, and now you can pick up terabytes' worth of computer storage on the cheap. Solid-state drive prices have plummeted in the past few years, too, but it's still hard to beat the 'price-per-terabyte' of a hard drive, especially at these larger, multi-terabyte capacities. Of course, with solid-state drives you're also paying for the increased performance, smaller form-factor, and ease of installation. However, if all you need is mass storage for back-up, then you may be better off with hard drives.
