What is an SSD?

Unlike a HDD (Hard Disk Drive) an SSD has no moving parts. Because of this they are more resistant to shocks and knocks which is why they are used in laptop computers. 2.5" SSDs also differ from HDDs in that they store data in flash memory, are quieter and much faster.

Choosing Your SSD

The Solid State Drives available on Ebuyer come with various specifications and from leading brand names such as Corsair, Crucial and Kingston amongst others.

What are the benefits of an SSD

Firstly, we need to talk about speed. And here we are not just talking about fast or super-fast. We are talking about speed which will change your online life! When you've samples SSDs you'll never want to go back to HDDs. The second good reason you need an SSD is the cost. They are really great value these days and the price of them has come down quite a lot in the last few years. They are great value for money.

Capacity and more

SSDs have varied capacities, take a look at our rough guide below. Another thing which SSDs have is actually something you can't hear. Because they have no moving parts, they are virtually silent. They are also quite small, which makes them suitable for efficient builds of desktop PCs and perfect for those ultra-slim laptops.

How much GB is enough?

128GB: if you are happy browsing the web, watching Netflix and the other streaming channels and listening to Spotify, you will be fine. What we're saying is, if all your movies and music is actually streamed online, then you won't require much storage capacity.

256GB: This is perfect for the students. However, if you are a keen gamer, it is not enough, you will need 1TB unless you are happy to use a hard drive as a secondary drive to store all your games.

512GB: This amount of storage means you won't have to worry about running out of space. But, if gaming, you might need a decent amount on games installed on your SSD so you'll need something extra; A secondary drive will enable you to build a library of the games you love. It's better to have too much capacity rather than too little.

1TB: Now we're getting there. 1TB is enough for the vast majority of gamers and photographers, but if you're a video editor, then additional storage will likely be required.

2TB: Again, this is a good amount of storage for most gamers, but if you're a professional video editor or work in the field of 3D, you may need additional storage for your demanding heavy workload.

4TB: Yes, this is a lot for most people, possibly too much. But, if you have a large movie and music collection and a ton of high-resolution photos to store, this is perfect.

SATA III

When choosing your 2.5" SSD make sure it is SATA lll (the latest technology) and ensure you choose a drive with a large enough capacity to meet the demands placed on your computer. The more intense the applications you will be using the bigger the drive should be.

Easy To Fit

When you order a new 2.5" SSD drive you will need to fit it yourself. With most laptops this is quite a straight forward and quick procedure.
