Is USB 3.0 compatible?

Whether you get a new USB 3.0 device or a new computer which supports USB 3.0, your old device will still work. Of course, it will work at the 2.0 speed. Just in case you were wondering, you will not be able to use a USB 3.0 cable to connect a USB 2.0 device.

Transfer rates of 3.0

All the usual Megabit and Gigabit talk sounds impressive, but does anyone really know what it needs in performance terms? Here is an example: To transfer a 10GB file from your laptop to an external drive will take around 25 seconds using USB 3.0. This would take more than five minutes with USB 2.0. So, you can see how much faster it is.

A note on cables

USB 3.0 supports a maximum cable length of three metres. This is a reduction compared to USB 2.0 which supports a cable length of five metres. There is a way around this though, as if you use hubs, the maximum length can be extended to 18 metres.
