What makes a 42" TV good?

When you're thinking about investing in a new TV, a 42" model can be the perfect purchase. 42" and above (that is, up to 47") means a screen large enough to make the most of the show or film you're watching and will also show off all of the TV's features - but without completely dominating your entertainment space. If you like, it's the tipping point between modest sized TVs and very large TVs - so it's a really great balance.

What features does a 42" TV have?

Smart capability

Smart TVs are televisions which connect directly to the internet and incorporate an operating system which allows you to view online streaming content like Netflix, BBC iPlayer or YouTube. In addition to streaming from the internet, there are models of smart TV which have the ability to screen share - that is, to view content from compatible smartphones, tablets, laptops or desktop PCs on the TV screen. Some manufacturers have their own name for this facility (LG calls it SmartShare and Samsung call it SmartView).

Resolution

Resolution means the number of pixels on screen. Full HD is 1920 across x 1080 down, and gives a very good picture of more than enough quality for most households. However, 4K (also known as UHD - Ultra High Definition) is a four-fold increase in the number of pixels on screen. It offers unparalleled clarity, incredibly rich in detail. Even if you don't yet have a stack of 4K Blu-rays at hand, some TV manufacturers integrate upscaling into sets. This feature means that 1080p and lower res content is artificially upgraded to 4K. It's not as good as actual 4K, but you will definitely notice an improvement.
