ReadyNAS duo RND2110 awesome!
Firstly, must give props to ebuyer, I ordered my NAS at 4pm and it arriived the next day at 10am, blinding service and speed.
This is my first NAS drive and after much research I decided this one best meets my needs, I would say I am fairly tech savvy so I like functionality and options but without over egging it, so this was perfect for my needs (streaming, backups, off-site access, remote torrents etc).
I set the NAS up with basic settings in about 1 hour, so effectively had it all up and running but without any advanced features. It took me around 3 days (an hour here and there) of playing with the config settings before I got everything humming with all features hooked up. Thats not to say I didnt have my fair share of problems getting things to work ie remote access, email alerts as was often the case with me I followed the instructions to the letter but got errors which resulted in me searching the readynas forums for solutions, which I did find but it was a little frustrating to have to go down this path. My advice here is if you find problems they are more likely legacy settings on your PC/Laptop/ISP that need tweaking to allow the readynas to work as designed, so dont immediately think your NAS is duff if you have similar problems and note the solutions are out there.
Anyway, I am very pleased with the NAS and looking back really enjoyed setting it up and have learned a few things in the process. I have sent away for my free 1tb drive so am looking forward to playing with the backup/raid settings when it arrives.
In summary I think this is a great machine for home enthusiasts who like a little more power/features than typical home targeted kit and would recommend the NAS thoroughly.
Excellent piece of kit
operating system:Windows 7eBuyer's done it again - ordered it on a Friday afternoon for delivery Saturday and as usual it arrived in excellent condition abd for a very good price.
I echo the previous reviewer in that it is a very good piece of kit, very well built, quite cute in a geeky sort of way (a bit smaller than you would expect from the picture) and has just the right balance of features without making it too complicated to set up. It is also quiet.
In case you do buy one (what are you waiting for?!) here are a few pointers that may help:
- you do not need to use the software on the CD (except for the manual) - all can be done from the web interface (it will give you a site certificate error on access but that can easily be by-passed if you use Firefox)
- when creating shares (folders on the NAS) make sure you do not use the same names as logons of your PCs, laptops etc - i.e if your Windows username is 'Fred' use a share name of 'FredFiles' or similar otherwise you will not be able to access your files on the NAS
- Get yourself a Gigabit switch (hint: quickfind 132466) to speed up the data link between PC and NAS (if your PC supports it)
- Set it up with a fixed IP address
- Do not order an extra caddy for the NAS as it comes with two (one Seagate HDD is supplied)
- remember to claim your free HDD (you will need to print the invoice from eBuyer, cut off the barcode from the product box and print the relevant form [see link above] and send it in by recorder mail).
Some features I like:
- you can set it to switch off/on at a given schedule
- if you use Seagate drives it works well with the Seagate Disk Wizard (free to download/use and allows you to image your PC)
- it integrates well with iTunes
- it constantly monitors its health and reports back to you by email if any problems arise (you need to know you SMTP settings for that - I used gmail's)
- it has good support on the Net should you get stuck
It deserves 5 stars and more.
excellent
operating system:OtherExcellent piece of kit especially for the price. To take advantage of this you need to connect it to a gigabit network and only use gigabit or wireless n hardware, otherwise it is slow in transferring big files. Once you get your free drive then you can either have 2TB with better performence but no backup or 1TB with extra peace of mind. It does make a noise which is annoying at night whilst trying to watch tv. I would recommend you put this in a cupboard somewhere out of the way. Easy to setup and as it is web based so you can acces your files from anywhere. Really pleased with it and like the fact that is if I you ever exceed the 2TB (1tb RAID)you can add additional usb HDDs. Highly recommended
Great product
operating system:Windows XPFirst of all, it was my first time buying from ebuyer and there were no problems at all. From ordering to delivery, everything was fine and I could track the status of my order and delivery online.
The device was easy to set up and there is lots of help and suggestions on a forum for this device if you run into any problems which I would advise people to have a quick read of. There is a frequently asked questions page which gives you a really good idea what the device can do and how to do it.
I managed to set up a fixed IP address as recommended and get my main PC and a laptop to log in to the device automatically so both computers can access the data whenever they want (both on Windows XP).
The device did have the occasional blip of disconnecting but this was when the network was under heavy load when I was copying across all my data and it could be an issue with the router. Now that all the data is on there and I am just accessing and adding data as I need to it works perfectly and has never disconnected once.
There are lots of features but I mainly use the DLNA service to stream the photos/video/music to my PS3 and this works very well. I previously used a wired connection and a free DLNA streaming program on my PC and although it worked it was nowhere near as quick as this, particularly with photo thumbnails and browsing photos.
I also have the NAS set up to automatically turn on when I get home from work and turn off at night which is really useful as it saves on electricity and it being on all day doing nothing.
The device is initially noisy when you turn it on but this is just the fan on maximum speed during startup. Once it loads up the fan settles down and the only time I can ever hear the device is if the room is totally silent. With the TV on or people talking you would never even know it's there but mine is hidden away behind the TV, if it is on your desk it would obviously be more noticeable.
I copied around 200gb of data onto the NAS. My PC isn't gigabit compatible so I'm just using a normal ethernet cable and old router and a wireless connection for the laptop but the transfer speeds are ok.
There is currently an offer to claim a free HD too so you basically get 2x1TB drives plus the device which coupled with all the features I think makes the whole package good value.
