External Hard Drives

External Hard Drives

An external hard drive is an incredibly useful piece of kit. It provides secure storage for back up files and can massively expand the storage capacity of a PC or Mac. And, though desktop models are available, most external hard drives are very light and easily portable which makes them ideal for safely transporting valuable digital files.

External Hard Drives From The Leading Names In Tech

There are plenty of manufacturers offering external hard drives including Western Digital, Verbatim and iStorage.

Your Options

Most external hard drives are connected via USB though there are some wireless models. And there are four main type of drive to consider when choosing the one that suits you best.

Desktop hard drives are, as the name suggests, designed to sit on your desk and act as a permanent additional hard drive for your PC. These units tend to be larger and can massively increase the storage capacity of your computer as they can be as large as over ten terabytes. This makes them ideal for business users and home users who have large movie collections.

But most of us, when looking for an external hard drive, will want a light, portable model. And here at Ebuyer.com we have a large range of portable hard drives. And, though they have lower capacities than the desktop variety, they still have more than enough space from most of us and can easily store hundreds of videos and thousands of other media files. And, for those who value speed above everything else, there is also the option of portable portable SSD hard drives.

As already mentioned most external hard drives are connected to the computer by USB. However, if you are looking for a wireless solution you can click here to find the latest models.

Find Your New Hard Drive

Although storage capacity is probably the most important consideration when choosing a new external hard drive there are other things to consider. The interface, power source, number of drives and, of course, the price all need to be factored into your decision. To help you narrow your search you can use the handy filter features on the left of the screen to select the different options that are available.

Whichever external hard drive you choose you can be confident that you will get the best deal online right here at Ebuyer.com. Take advantage of our low prices and order today.

External Hard Drive Buying Guide

An external hard drive is an ideal, and very easy, way to add extra storage to your computer. Use them to store all your movies, photos and music or they can also be used for the essential backing up that we all know we should do but mostly forget or neglect to do.

Three compelling reasons to buy an external hard drive

Firstly buying an external hard drive is an easy way to add extra storage space to a system without having to open up the case. Secondly the majority of the drives are plug and play so can be used with any machine and, thirdly, the cost per gigabyte is exceptionally low.

Types of external hard drives

There are four types of external hard drive and we will look at them all here.

Desktop Hard Drive

These are the largest units and generally have larger capacities than the other types. They are intended to be kept permanently in one place and usually have their own power source.

Because of their larger capacities and workloads (they are often used for extensive backing up) external desktop hard drives will often have their own built-in fans. This ensures they remain cool and continue to operate correctly no matter how long they are used for or how much data they process.

Desktop hard drives can be fairly large units so can be quite obtrusive. However their extra storage power makes them an important piece of kit for those of us who have a lot of data to store or have resource intensive systems to back up.

Portable Hard Drives

As they are designed to be carried from one place to another portable hard drives are lighter and have less storage capacity than their desktop counterparts. These devices are small and can be easily carried in a bag or pocket and, as they are plug and play, can be used to ferry large amounts of data between different locations and machines.

portable external hard drive

Unlike desktop models these portable devices do not have their own power source as they are powered from the computer they are connected to. Usually by a USB 2.0 or the faster 3.0 connection.

Portable SSD Drives

Pretty much ditto the above but SSD devices have faster data transfer rates than HDDs. However, like internal SSDs, the portable SSDs have smaller storage capacities than the traditional hard disk drives.

Portable Wireless Drives

These wireless hard drives are terrific pieces of kit. Designed to be an entertainment hub as well as a storage device these drives are versatile and can be taken anywhere. They are absolutely invaluable if you are on a family holiday or have gone camping or caravanning.

These devices are wireless and have a long range. They can store a large amount of data but are at their best with media such as movies or music. Most portable wireless drives can stream content to multiple devices including laptops, tablet PCs and smartphones. Some models can simultaneously stream up to five videos to different devices making it an ideal solution for a family holed up in a caravan during inclement weather!

Choosing your external hard drive

There are a few things you should look out for when choosing the best external hard drive for you.

Capacity

Probably the first thing that most of us will look for. There isn’t much point in buying an external drive with only limited storage so I suppose the advice here is to buy as many gigabytes as you can afford. If you are buying the hard drive simply as additional storage it should be at least as large as your internal drive and preferably have twice as much storage.

Spin Speed

The basic rule here is that the faster the spin speed the faster data can be transferred and stored or read and written. A transfer speed of 5GBps will be ample for most purposes though even faster drives are available. Again buy the fastest drive you can afford.

Interface

The third of the big three things to consider when looking for an external HDD is the interface. Many external hard drives will have either a USB 2.0 or the much faster USB 3.0 connection that simply plug into the interface that every computer will have.

USB 3.0 is around ten times faster than 2.0 and is backwards compatible so it can be used with any USB connection. If you do have the choice between 2.0 and 3.0 always choose the later for your external hard drive.

Other common interfaces are Thunderbolt and FireWire. These are super-fast connections with the former used exclusively for Mac computers though FireWire can be found on both PCs and Macs.

Another interface you may come across is eSATA. This is the external (hence the ‘e’) counterpart of SATA which is used to connect internal hard drives to the motherboard.

Uses for external hard drives

Most external drives are used simply for their extra storage capacity. When the hard drive in our computer becomes full many of us are reluctant to open up the case and install a new or additional HDD. So adding an external hard drive is a simple and practical solution that all of us can use.

The external drive can be used to store all documents and media files whilst the machines HDD is reserved for applications and booting up. An external hard drive is also ideal for backing up the full system to protect the user against hardware failure. This ensures important or sensitive data is always secure even if the computer’s internal hard drive suffers a catastrophic failure.

data storage on external hard drives

Portable hard drives also allow large amounts of data to be easily moved between computers. So, if you have a PC at work as well as at home, files can be easily moved between the two machines.

Media files such as movies and photos can be easily shared with friends and family by simply plugging the drive into their machine and copying the files across. And, because portable hard drives are so inexpensive, a different drive can be used to house different collections of photos or movies.
