Intuitive and gorgeous!

Early days with this camera, but so far I am impressed. Owning a Nikon slr and a Pentax slr, I was naturally drawn toward them (or a Samsung) when it came to upgrading to a dslr, but I decided to take the plunge with the Olympus. Reasons? Price, bundled lenses and features.

The 510 handles very well with a good handgrip, and the supersonic dust removal system comes better reputed than other brands. The lenses give good results across the range (you times them by two for their film equivalents), and I have been impressed by the results of the camera stabilisation system in low light. There are heaps of selection options to choose from, and I reckon that with familiarity will come content! The build quality is solid;it does not claim to be weatherproofed, but it is certainly as sound as any film camera that I have owned. It is relatively light for a dslr, and the LCD is bright and can be brightened. Battery life appears to be very good, and it is easy to switch between the different photo formats (raw/jpeg), and between photo cards (it takes xd and compact flash, and microdrive if you must). The automatic focus system is very quick to lock on to subjects in all but dim light, and my first instinct is that this is the best camera that I have owned to date.

I will post a few months hence when I have been able to explore it more.

The only points of reservation are that the rubber seal for the usb connection is something that I feel Olympus - and all other dslr manufacturers - should look at improving, and the card cover door could have a more sturdy closure.

I like the lenses having lens hoods included, and the live view option with the camera gives it added flexibility (although an adjustable pivoting live view display would have made this even more seductive; the lcd is fixed screen, but clearly viewable from waist level or held above your head).

At this price it really is difficult to fault this bundle. I am sure that when prices fall and technology moves on over the next few years I will feel the desire to upgrade, but at that time this camera will still be a more than adequate camera to pass on to my young camera-mad daughter. It feels sturdy and as well built as my dear old Pentax K100, and will withstand a fair few light knocks (although this is not to be recommended!).

I dithered about making this purchase for a number of months; if you are thinking about taking the plunge yourself, then I would heartily recommend this camera at this price point and specification. It is thrillingly better than my previous digital camera, a Pentax 7mp Optio 750z, although that has been an excellent compact camera. If you buy it you will not be disappointed.

Having had the pleasure of using this camera for a while now, these are my thoughts.

1. Battery life is very good, although obviously carry a spare. A battery will see you through a day of shooting.

2. The xd card (mine is an 'm')is a fast writing option, and gives you an additional 2mb of memory, which is handy.

3. The results that I have had so far are really good. Exposures on the auto setting have been very satisfactory, and manual tweaks are easy.

4. Focus has tended to be both quick and reliable, and it will shoot off three bracketed exposures in quick time!

5.It is a gorgeous thing to hold, the hand grip being substantial.

6. The viewfinder is clearer and bigger than some magazine reviews had led me to believe; it is as bright as my old Nikon, and doesn't feel restrictive to the eye. I did not feel that I had to adjust to it at all.

7. The live view aspect is handy, and it works well with remote control accessory that allows you to take self-portraits/ longer exposures (not in the kit, but cheap on ebay). The live view image can be a bit dim on normal setting, but can be made brighter at the expense of battery life.

8.It fits a smaller camera bag well - I'm using a Lowepro slingshot 100, which is excellent. This means that the e-510 is very portable.

9.I have shot at 1/15th with the tele lens (without flash or tripod - handheld!) and have achieved an amazingly stable and sharp image owing to the built in is (anti-shake)system. I was amazed!

10. I'm still exploring the plethora of setting options that come with the camera, but I have yet to be disappointed.

11. The camera package that I received was sourced from North/South America, and comes with a one year world wide guarantee.

So......overall I am finding the camera difficult to fault.I reckon the next generation will be weatherproofed like the Pentax 10D/Samsung GX10, and I am wary of taking it out in rainy conditions, but I reckon that would go for most cameras. I am really enjoying using it. It is feature rich and user friendly; I'm glad that I bought it. 5 stars!

In 35mm film camera terms the two lenses included with the kit cover a range of focal lengths from 28 to 300mm. Both lenses are small and light and provided edge to edge sharpness - check out the reviews - these are about the best 'kit' lenses around.

The E-510 is beautifully put together and has very good ergonomics. In body IS (Image Stabilisation) is a boon and really comes into its own when hand-holding at 300mm.

Live view (not currently available on other cameras in this price range) is fantastic for macro work or when trying to capture a shot but not being able to look through the view finder - it's a shame it's not articulated like the one on the E-3 as this would really be the icing on the cake.

Olympus have really scored with the size and weight of this kit (the E-410 is smaller but doesn't have IS or Liveview) and the smaller and lighter your equipment the less likely you are to leave it at home.

The E-510 + the two lenses provides you with everything you need to take professional quality images and at ebuyers' current price it's a bit of a bargain!

For this price, it's incredibly hard to find anything wrong with this camera. The two lenses are of surprisingly good quality, and overall the camera surpasses anything currently out there in the same category. Best birthday present in a long time!

I purchased it with a Lexar 133x CF card, as this seemed to be one of the fastest solutions - and indeed it is.

Get another battery (go for an original one if you can, some people say that the cheapo ones might damage the camera), and otherwise just treat it well and keep learning. It's easy enough to get to know the camera and how to operate it, so don't be put off by the initial shock of having so much control.

Read a few reviews online (dpreview.com for example) and keep in mind their recommended settings for optimal results: sharpness -1 or -2, noise filter off or low. Exposure is occasionally a tiny bit too high (very light areas lose some detail), but that's very easy to control too.

The only minor gripe would be that I ordered mine a few days before it dropped in price from 419.96 to 399.99 - bummer!

I have had this DSLR for about three months now. I did extensive research online as this was my first DSLR having previously owned SLR. Most camera magazines give this camera top marks, it is astonishing value for money when bundled with the twin lens kit. These kit lenses are remarkable, giving very clear crisp images, in fact one reviewer compared the 14-42mm against the much more expensive pro lens 14-54mm, the results were hardly noticeable. The E510 has built-in image stabilisation which works well, live view and an anti-dust system. There are very few faults to find with this camera perhaps the motorised auto-focus is not to everyones taste and also you need to set your own values for white balance etc in the menu as the factory presets are a little off, but all in all one very good camera. I have added the 70-300mm lens and now have a complete set-up I can take anywhere. If you are considering entering the budget DSLR market this is the camera for you. Buy it!

I've owned this camera now for around 6 months and I payed 650GBP for this camera kit. I'm still telling people now that its well worth the money that I paid and at this price its really not to be missed.

This really is a fantastic camera and the photo's that it produces are exceptional. The camera has all of the features that I could ask for like Image Stabilisation in 2 forms. also it has dust reduction for the image sensor.

I can't express enough how great this camera is. There are so many features on this camera I'm still learning months later.

Buy one now, You won't regret it.

Olympus E510 - Superb buy

I bought an E510 from Ebuyer (usual excellent service - many thanks) just over a month ago to take on a family holiday.

Having not used a DLSR before, I was a bit concerned that it would be difficult to use given all of the features, but was very pleasantly surprised. This camera is simple to operate; the different modes are easily accessible and simple to get to grips with and the picture quality is outstanding. I have had prints back up to A3 size (from shutterfly.com and dscolourlabs.co.uk - both of them highly recommended) and was very pleased with the results.

I cannot recommend this camera highly enough for anyone making the jump to a DSLR - at the price Ebuyer are charging it is a steal

I bought this camera a few weeks ago, and so far it is superb. Although I haven't got out and about with it so far as much as I would have liked, the battery is still pretty much fully charged, which is better than I had expected. The two lenses bundled with the body make it superb value for money.

Even at the highest zoom level of the larger of the two lenses, the built in image stabilisation of the camera produced completely shake-free photographs.

With plenty of functions to play with, even the automatic modes provide great results - plus you can always shoot in RAW and change some of the settings later to tweak your images that little bit more.

I can't wait to play with it more, and certainly hope to do so in the next few weeks. This is my first DSLR, and so far I am very, very impressed.

I have been a user of film SLR cameras for years. Bought this one to try digital SLR photography. I have used E510 extensively since purchasing a month ago. I am very impressed with its performance and results.
