Ace Piece of Kit
operating system:OtherBrought this as it's one of the few DSL modems around that supports PPP half bridging, sending the public IP through to the inside device making life easy for VPNs.
If you already have a firewall/router/AP without a DSL modem built-in then this is the perfect modem to connect it with.
good bit or kit
operating system:LinuxI have this in front of a m0n0wall firewall and it works perfect. The m0n0wall wan is set to dhcp and the adsl modem has been configured as per the below faq from zyxel:
http://www.zyxel.co.uk/web/support_faq_detail.php?faqID=136
Do ZyXEL routers support a mode of operation where the single public IP address is pushed onto a device such as a separate firewall on the LAN?
Solution:
This mode of operation is referred to as half bridge mode and is only supported on the P-660R-D1 router. In this mode the PPP session is terminated on the router but the IP address is pushed back onto the device on the LAN. DHCP is used to issue the IP address to the device on the LAN. The router also uses this public IP address for the default gateway when it offers the DHCP settings.
It applies to both PPPoA and PPPoE modes. PPPoA is commonly used in the UK.
To set up this mode of operation
1) Configure the router in a standard PPPoA setup so that it works to a PC connected on the LAN
2) Turn off NAT
3) Telnet into the router and at the command line enable half bridge mode: "poe bridge switch on"
4) Set the DHCP lease time to a short period, eg 120 seconds: "ip dhcp enif0 server lease 120"
An excellent piece of equipment!
operating system:Not ApplicableI use this modem in full bridge mode on O2's LLU Pro service.
My upstream sync rate went from ~2Mbps to ~2.5Mbps - an unexpected 25% improvement over the O2 supplied router!
Ignore bad reviews elsewhere
operating system:Not ApplicableMy old ADSL router was acting up, with speeds dropping as low as 200kbps every few days. As I had it connected to a gigabit router, I really only needed a simple ADSL router like this. I have it connected to the gigabit router's WAN interface.
Plugged it all in, entered passwords etc, worked first time. Now getting 6.5Mbps - best ever.
I did a lot of research before buying, and there do seem to be a lot of poor reviews elsewhere - I think they're from people who didn't really understand what they were buying. If you have a 'proper' network or are using a cable modem for a router, this is definitely for you. If you have a single computer, this will work fine. If you have multiple computers and don't have another router, it probably isn't for you.
