Brilliant router at a great price
operating system:LinuxI've been using this router for over a month now and I think it's about time it got its first review!
This is a brilliant little router, I mainly bought it because it was recommended on coding horror & the amazon reviews were very positive.
This version of the router comes with a Buffalo branded version of DD-WRT (a pleasant surprise as I was expecting to have to flash it myself!) and as far as I can tell, the only difference between it and stock DD-WRT is that Buffalo have changed the colour scheme slightly. As far as I know you can use the included CD to install a more "user friendly" (aka dumbed down) control panel, but I prefer the flexibility of DD-WRT :)
As other reviews have said, this is a cable router and doesn't include an adsl modem, but you can get a separate one and plug it into the WAN port. We're using it as a wireless access point in an existing network & in our experience the wifi is brilliant! At Uni I live on the second floor but we can still get ~ 2 bars of signal when in the Kitchen on the ground floor. At home our house is fairly big with pretty thick walls, but with the router setup in the middle of the house we can get ~ 50% signal just about anywhere in the house :)
The packaging claims that the router has a wireless throughput of 300mbp/s, though it seems you can only get this speed if you restrict your network to wireless n devices only. Ours is currently set to n+g and we're getting around 150mbp/s, which is more than enough.
One concern that I had with this router before buying it was that it didn't have as much memory as other routers, but after using it for a while this has turned out to be a mute point. Looking at the router's stats page there's 40MB free out of a total of 60MB and the load average very rarely goes above 0.06
Overall this is a fantastic little router for the money and I have no problem recommending it :)
