Boxee Media Centre
operating system:Windows XPI have been using Boxee for a while now on my XP based media centre (MCE 2005 - after finding Boxee I feel I should have opted for Home). Boxee is fantastic software, with people (including myself) developing apps in an open-source environment. The look and feel of Boxee is perfect for screens larger than a typical PC. Boxee has an Apple style professional feel with a cross-platform freedom. Don't diss it until you've tried it.
I have had a little difficulty though, getting BBC iPlayer to work correctly as, I did with XBMC, (this is the parent application to Boxee which is a fork of XBMC, or originally, XBox Media Center).
I have not had the opportunity to see how the bespoke D-Link offering compares but, from the Boxee community feedback, (yes, a full, free open support site just for Boxee) the Boxee software is almost identical across platforms and is not likely to disappoint. D-Link seem to be pioneering Boxee commercially in the UK, so the likelyhood is that you will have dedicated support from a corporate as well as from Boxee; not only that, but the kit this is pre-installed on will have been tested well (save yourself the hassle of matching suitable hardware, the work has been done for much less than many main players will sell similar systems for).
hardcore film downloader this is for you
operating system:Windows 7thought would do a decent review on this as only 1 other on here. i looked at loads of different media streaming solutions in cluded WD hardwired stramer etc. but il be honest if you have over 100+ films on a NAS drive or on a pc this box is 110% for you. it will automatically download film covers for you instead of just giving you the names like the other cheap brands like WD and AC RYAN.
at first i was like ahh man £186 thats alot of money but give it 2 weeks and you will want another for your bedroom! iv got 3 now 1 in living room 1 in bedroom and one in daughters room and the wireless streaming is quick and reliable. the guys at boxee really think of everything and because the remotes are blue tooth not old school inf red you dont need to wave your arms in the air to get it to play etc. keyboard on the back is spot on as well. people always ask "whats that little box" and 2 of my mates went out and brought one after seeing it!.
if you have finished reading this click buy!! lol =)
Well impressed
operating system:Windows VistaI purchased a boxee box this week from ebuyer, firstly the service & delivery from ebuyer I have always found second to none.
I bought the boxee as I was using my PS3 as a media streamer, & it worked okay, but I had issues from time to time with streaming content from my d-link media server, it would stop half way through or not stream the file at all, I found it very unreliable, but I suppose it isn't meant to be a streamer in the first instance.
Boxee however has recognised everything I have threw at it, it linked up to my NAS box recognised the files and it was off & running (it did take a few hours to scan the NAS box). The menu's are very easy to understand & navigate once it is running.
Another plus side is the apps, it gives you endless content for whatever you need, I personally like to watch Dignation, which I normally run on an iPad, however the revision 3 app on the boxee allows me to to watch in HD on my TV.
All in all I would say it isn't the cheapest media streamer, but for the limitless content & easy setup I would say if you can afford it treat yourself to a boxee.
Good media player with extas
operating system:Not ApplicableThis is my 3rd media player and its the only one that plays every file format ive come across. The quality of its up-scaling is superb. The remote is pure genius.
The apps are its let down. Of all the UK mainstream TV "on Demand" services only the BBC iPlayer works. If you want 4OD for instance you need to visit the shady side of the internet to install it onto Boxee. However while you are there you can add services to allow access to HD Streams of Prem Footy live matches & Moive streams etc.
D-Link seem to be adding more and more US content which is annoying as we in the UK cant access it.
However if you are looking for top end mdia player which includes network streming then this is the one to get.
