Excellent upgrade
operating system:
Windows XPI got this as an upgrade for my Acer Aspire 5002WLMi laptop, which came with a 60GB drive originally when I bought it in 2006. I desperately needed more space and this seems to be the biggest laptop drive available in IDE format, so it was a no brainer really.
It works very well, it's a good bit faster than my old drive and very quiet. Power consumption is only 0.55A which ought to be good for battery life!
There was a slight problem - Acer's fault, not WD's - in that the Acer BIOS puts HPA (host protected area) on the drive so most of the space is locked off by default and can't be used.
To get the full 320GB, I had to run the (free) HDAT2 utility and disable the HPA feature on the drive itself, which was a bit of a pain as I had to start the laptop with the drive removed, boot HDAT2 from CD, then insert the hard drive while the laptop was running, to stop the Acer BIOS from locking the drive. Once I'd done all that though, the drive formatted OK and worked first time.
Anyway, I reinstalled Windows on the new drive and it's like having a brand new machine! Great choice if you have a laptop that's a few years old and doesn't support the newer SATA drives.

Windows XPFast for a 5400rpm drive, and beats my old Seagate Momemtus 7200 100gb. An important upgrade for my laptop.
