Overview

Product Description

Linksys WAP54G 54Mbps Wireless-G Access Point

Wireless-G is the 54Mbps wireless networking standard that's almost five times faster than the widely deployed Wireless-B (802.11b) products found in homes, businesses, and public wireless hotspots around the country - but since they share the same 2.4GHz radio band, Wireless-G devices can also work with existing 11Mbps Wireless-B equipment.

The Linksys WAP54G Wireless-G Access Point lets you connect Wireless-G or Wireless-B devices to the network. Since both standards are built in, you can protect your investment in existing 802.11b infrastructure, and migrate your network clients to the new screaming fast Wireless-G standard as your needs grow.

To protect your data and privacy, the Linksys WAP54G Wireless-G Access Point can encrypt all wireless transmissions. The MAC Address filter lets you decide exactly who has access to your wireless network. Configuration is a snap with the web browser-based configuration utility.

Future-proof your wireless network with the Linksys WAP54G Wireless-G Access Point. You'll enjoy Wireless-B connectivity today, and be prepared for a high-speed Wireless-G tomorrow.

Latest firmware makes a dud work better!

operating system: Windows 2000

Tried another one of these things with the final 802.11g spec firmware release. Much, *MUCH* better. It's a shame it was useless previously.

It may be worth noting that as this device is Linux based, you can flash an update from www.wirelessnederland.nl under the DOWNLOADS/FIRMWARE section. It's in Dutch but quite easy to follow. This is based on the immediately previous firmware but allows handy features such as antenna diversity control (like the latest version) and ther power output can be controlled in small increments from the standard 22 to a max of 84mw.

The WAP54G is now worth having.

Great piece of kit

I have this hooked up to 2 laptops wirelessly (one with linksys 54M card, one internal wireless) and also hard wired to home PC

Works great, and all over the house.

I did have some signal issues at one point, called linksys support, and they advised changing channel as possible interferance, and all was great again.

So now we can have all 3 of us online at same time if we need, sharing the broadband.

Two points to note :
1. This model does not have a built in modem
2. The connection from your modem to this box needs to be ethernet (not USB), so if you are a BT user, you may wish to buy the box with built in modem instead

So far so good

I have been using two of these for different things for a few months now. I found then very simple indeed to set up & have had no operating problems at all. I Have had no troubles like those noted in other reviews.
However I am using Linksys 54g cards on the wireless parts of my networks. Using other types of card is probably asking for trouble.

Works out of the box
review by: Daniel Wilkinson rating:

Previous review indicate the need to flash the firmware - I bought mine in Feb 2004 and the firmware was 6 months old according to it's timestamp, but low and behold there is no updated firmware on the website - this is a good thing, shows that it has all stabilised and mine worked rightout of the box giving me the full signal strength and speed immediately.

The only thing I am not keen on is the web admin configuration tool. It's easy enough to get to and configure, but has 2 annoying things:

1) There is no user ID, just a password. You can change the password, but configuring it is the sort of thing that you are only going to configure every few months at most and you are going to spend hours guessing at the username even tho you have the password right until you read the manual or remember there is no user name to input!

2) I would like a page on the webadmin bit to show how many wireless nodes are connected into the client. Seems there is no way to tell how many people are using your WAP...

Great Piece of kit.!!!!

I've had this since October last year, but only set it up last week. Set up was a piece of cake. Very easy. I had none of the problems previous buyers have experienced nor did i have to upgarde firmware etc. It worked straight out of the box.

I am using a Linksys card in my laptop. That may have made things easier. It always connects at 54Mbps while the signal strength and signal quality are excellant in all parts of the house. (The access point is upstairs next to the modem, and my study is downstairs - no signal problems at all)

In all i'm really happy with it and price and value for money are excellent

Great product...

I have two of these, two WRE54G's and a WRT54G plus a cheap Origo ADSL modem 1 port router. This network supports four apartments quite happily and will support more. The two WAP54G's talk to each other via repeater mode, with a WRE54G talking to the WAP54G in remote mode, and the other WRE54G talking to the WRT54G (remote mode only). I also use Linksys high-gain antennas for better signal (highly recommended). The WRE54G's simply help to extend the range into the apartments, so that computers can be used wherever the uses wishes. Only two WAP54G’s can be used in any one sequence; so I got around this problem by using the WRT54G (wireless 4-port router) and plugging one of the WAP54G’s into it, so as to have one WAP in repeater mode and one in remote mode upstairs.

All the wireless network cards in use are different brands and speeds, and connect with on problems at all.

Can recommend www.hamachi.cc – for simple networking/file-sharing over NAT, over the internet and LAN; free download, easy to use.

WEP enabled and MAC-address filtering, with no problems.

Fast & Reliable
review by: Anonymous rating:

This is a very fast access point with good range. I can get 54mbps all over the house (although pushing it at the extremes - sometimes drops to 48). Using it with the Linksys PCMCIA card the speed is really impressive. Had to flash the firmware to the Final 802.11g standard (came with draft and found that the range was relatively poor - 11mbps around most of the house).

I would highly recommend this (especially for use with the matching Linksys PCMCIA card). Be prepared to flash the firmware though (available from the Linksys website).

Note: When downloading the firmware download from your region's web site - remember that America has less available channels...

Top stuff

Got my Linksys WAP54G this morning, and it took me about 30 minutes to integrate into my existing LAN. It replaces a P2P network I had, and seems to be doing rather well. The only thing I can't seem to get working that I could before is MSN Messenger, but this requires uPNP to filter through from my Router, which I am not sure how to do.

Otherwise it works perfectly with my centrino-based pentium-M laptop, however I am yet to test the 54mbps connection. 11mbps is fine, and the range is excellent.
