Used this as a Boot Raid and it does perform!
operating system:Windows 7I bought the StarTech 2 port SATA 6 GPS PCI (E) controller card from Ebuyer because I have a faulty Nvidia RAID controller onboard my Mobo, and I chose to not pay for postage and it took the full 5 working days to arrive, and I should really have bundled the order in with 2 previous items then I could have had them all on the same day a week ago.. :)
However I prevaricated and lost the opportunity. No fault of EBuyer and to their credit they sent the other items (2 hard drives.. Get to them later..) and they arrived the next day.
Anyway card arrived and I had planned to strip out my old 3g drives of the same size (500gb) and replace them with the previously mentioned ones above which are 2 WD 500GB 3.5" SATA 6Gb/s Caviar Blue Hard Drive - 7200RPM 16MB Cache, I got these for 27 quid apiece and they would make a nice 1 terrabyte raid!
I spent a half hour setting up the card and wiring and drive placement, I then started up and sure enough the Marvell configuration screen appeared and I pressed Ctrl-m and set up the raid in about half a minute, exited, and went on to a W764 bit install from disk with not a problems at all.
At the end of the setup I did find an exclamation mark in the device manager relating to the card but after a little research found that Marvell had released a fix: "Marvell9123_Controller_1001036-WHQL.zip" (Google it..) that is designed for this chipset works in most OS's and it installs a small console and Raid Driver for W764. Problem Vanished.
Ran HD Tune to check and see if there was an improvement and yes over my old RAID 0 I was seeing improvements that I am very happy with old RAID 0 showed average seek times of 106 Gps new RAID with card and Gps drives 188 Gps
Significant improvement much cheaper than a SSD still and the card will run SSD's when the time comes and well worth it I think total outlay 86 quid repaired duff RAID, Faster drives, future proofed.
I am well happy. :)
Awesome card for the money
operating system:Windows 7great service at ebuyer as usual
Top card , startech really seem to be leading edge products
Quality v good
Not bad, limited to 5Gbps. Speed is card based not port based
operating system:LinuxPerformed reasonably well over SATA II speeds as expected but ehre are some things to note:
* The card won't do 6Gbps, it'll do 5Gbps. This is noted in the option ROM for the card whcih you can access by pressing ctrl+M during post.
* The rated speed is for the controller, not for each port. i.e. with 2 drives your max throughput would be 5Gbps, not 10Gbps.
* I found optimum read and write performance using 2 of these cards with 4 SSD. I created 1 raid0 device per card then software raid 0 across the top in Linux. This gave me 760MB/s read and about 550MB/s write.
Four stars as it is cheap and easy to use.
Dammit!
operating system:Windows 7The card works at it's top speeds only if it's installed in a PCI-E slot at x2 or higher, and my mobo doesn't have any, just x1.
Consequently, I'm getting the same speeds if I'd just plugged my SATA 6Gbp SSD drive into a built-in SATA2 port. Wasted £30 and I wish it would have said this in the product description.
That said, the card works and I can boot from it and install Windows to a SSD on it.
