What options are available?

USB, which stands for universal serial bus, is a type of cable often used for attaching various peripheral and handheld devices to a computer.

It was designed in the early 1990s by a combination of some of the computer industry's top names (including Compaq, IBM, Intel and Microsoft) to provide a quick way of transmitting data, as well as power.

Two options are available: USB 2.0 and USB 3.0, with 3.0 offering faster speeds. Plug ends vary, with the most common being the type-A, which is easily recognisable and fits into common computer ports.

FireWire was originally designed by Apple and is also known as an IEEE 1394 high-speed serial bus. It is often used for digital communications, as it is quick enough for real-time data transfer. FireWire allows for peer-to-peer communication and can connect up to 63 devices in a daisy chain.

Just some of the peripherals that may use FireWire include data storage devices and professional audio and video equipment, as well as some consumer products. It is considered a faster and more efficient alternative to USB, but is also a bit more expensive.

Host bus adapters - HBAs - are designed for connecting computers to networks or storage systems like external hard drives. HBAs are also sometimes referred to as SCSI cables.
