good at first, then bad, now great!
operating system:Mac OSXI should probably explain:
I use the 500GB M-XT in my core i5 Macbook Pro (2010)
It replaces the 320GB 5400 drive and here are my findings.
It shipped with firmware SD23 which was an improvement over the first firmware that you will here all the horror stories about, causing issues like freezing, not waking from sleep and the spinning ball of death.
Everything copied over using carbon copy:
And at first it was very very fast at booting, loading programs and retrieving data.
The programs I use every day are, entourage, mail, Logic Studio 9, Ableton Live 8 and loads of samples, loops and virtual plugins.
All very HDD and CPU intensive.
After about a month of using the M-XT 500, things took a nose dive, it kept freezing, and logic would appear with 'disc too slow' error.
So I started wondering about perhaps sticking an SSD inside and putting this into an external fire wire enclosure.
And then I stumbled upon the message boards talking about SD24 firmware update! could it be all the power saving issues have been fixed, it is super fast and everything is as it should be?
In a word, YES. I was this close to removing it but I'm so glad I didn't, I take my MBP everywhere with me, and as such have partitioned the drive and use one of these as the sample / Audio library, one for MAC HDD and the other for other stuff. it will sometimes come up with disc too slow error, but only after 25 - 30 stereo channels with all the plugins in the world running full chat, plus audio.
For portability, storage space and speed of operation this will not be beaten. (yes it beats the hell out of WD-Scorpio Black, I have 2).
Oh and price, Until an SSD drops in price, I can;t afford it. We have 2 in the MAC PRO in the recording studio. And my MBP kicks it's A** at almost every operation. Ok it can't handle the number of open channels but what it can handle, it does much slicker.
Simply Wow!
operating system:Mac OSXI still just can't believe how fast the 2006 macbook 13" I upgraded with this drive was after installing it.
It went straight into the system and super duper copied across with no problems other than the desktop picture disappearing for some strange !?!
The old drive was an 80GB 5400 rpm drive and both startup and program load times were distinctly improved after the second startup and running the programs more than once.
Safari opened from scratch and opened and processed the bbc homepage in a fraction of a second as opposed to several seconds prior to the upgrade bringing performance inline with a one year old iMac on the same site.
from SSD to hybrid
operating system:Mac OSXI had a 60GB SSD, which was really fast, but 60gb just does not cut it. Being tight on space all the time sucks, and its SO nice not to worry if the lastest software update will even fit.
When i got the 500gb momentus xt, it was noticeably slower at first, but after about 5 boots and general safari/mail/itunes stuff it was probably 80-95% the speed of the SSD at a fraction of the cost.
if you're in need of storage, and don't have $1500 to drop on a ~500gb ssd, get this. you will not be disappointed.
Im considering putting this in my 2006 white macbook and expect to see HUGE performance boosts (over the stock 80gb 5400rpm hdd)
Mine's great!
operating system:Windows 7Makes my HTPC's bootup and operation noticably quicker than the 5400RPM 120GB drive that came out of it. Nice and quiet seek too. Best new HDD to come out for ages - buy one!
