Sweet....
operating system:Not ApplicableBought an UPS for my server, which runs Win2K.
Plugged the base unit into the UPS and when it had booted plugged the USB lead from the UPS into the server. It recognised it straight off, no faffing with driver CDs at all. 60secs to configure it, job done. I may come back later with real world runtimes of the UPS, but the battery is still charging. As to the first reviewer, the APC webpage reckons my UPS won't burst into flames, which is nice... :)
Excellent Backup Unit
operating system:Windows 2000An excellent unit. Simple to set up and sits in the background monitoring the power supply. Saved my system countless times as the power supply here is very sporadic (I live abroad).
Good software interface to let you customise sensitivity and specfiy high and low voltages above and below which it intervenes. It even tells you how many watts your system is drawing and how long it will last on battery. My Athon XP3200+ based system and flat-panel monitor draw approx 150 Watts, giving 15 minutes on battery - enough to close programs and shut down. System will provide up to 300 watts if needed.
Highly recommended.
Excellent Unit
I have been wary of cheaper APC UPS untis in the past as they tend to lack some features compared to the larger family member from the date center. This unit is pretty solid though, and a steal at the current price from ebuyer (62UKP inc VAT).
Linux users may want to investigate: http://www2.apcupsd.com/ as I found the APC Linux software is very basic (free daemon) and you need to pay for the full powerchute for Linux. Apcupsd supports the USB connection, reconises the UPS and allows automated shutdown of local machine and networked slaves (which may be on same UPS) based on battery time, battery % and other parameters.
The only thing that would be nice is if the unit was aware of its supply voltage, which would allow you to have graphs of your incoming power. Apart from that no complaints, although I have noticed it is a little sensitive to power fluctuations.
Unit gives around 43 minutes runtime with my two ITX based servers (admittidly low power with 60W PSU), and ADSL modem connected.
cs 500
Had one for 13 months now and up until 20th May it worked fine. Then it switched to battery for no reason and no matter how much I power it off, reset it and power on again, it won`t supply from the mains. It has a 2 year guarantee so have just requested an rma...
