Just being helpful

The 32MB cache isn't why it is fast, it's the extremely high data density and perpendicular storage that makes it fast.

Cache only helps for random reads, not sustained transfers, so is mostly unused except in servers or horribly fragmented desktops.

In Vista it will get a 5.9, as this really is one of the fastest drives for consumer use.

This is a fantastic hard drive, I had some trouble installing XP, but that was a BIOS setting which needed to be changed..how odd. I installed Visat first just to see if the 5.9 was true, and yeah it is, so thats all good. Something I have never seen anyone say is about the jumper on the hard drive, most hard drives come with a jumper which limits the data tranfer to Sata 1 (1.5Gb/s), so if you do want this to run as Sata 2 (3Gb/s) then make sure you remove the jumper first. But yeah this is a fantastic hard drive, so if you are looking for a new one, get this because it is second to none, top of the range

Silent, cool and fast

This is an impressive drive at an impressive price point.

I replaced a 250GB Western Digital (16MB cache) drive in a PowerMac G5 with one of these and the difference is amazing. The speed increase due to the larger cache is massive, and the drive is ultra-silent. In addition to that the drive is also cooler, meaning that the system fans run at a slower speed and hence quieter as well.

For me, this is the best SATA II drive on the market today.

Just as good as I expected

With AHCI enabled it gives 105MB/s Bursts with 87MB/s Sustained...

Bloody fast!

It has a higher sustained transfer than any Raptor drive, it's only slightly slower with seek speed.

I have purchased 4 of these drives and so far 2 Disks have bailed by not being detected in the bios... After varuious emails to Seagate and comments on the forum, Seagat have finally realised there is problem with there firmware. Have bought Seagates for most of my builds, I thought I would give the extra cache a go and I am impressed the i/o speed is fantastic. This drive is silent! Currently have 2 of these in a RAID 1+0, its OEM so no fancy box

Excellent - fast and quiet

This is fast, the drive acheived 70mb/s according to sandra in the same PC as a 10K U320 scsi drive on a PCI-X 133Mhz Adaptec Raid adapter which only manages 63Mb/s, not overly noisy either, but do hear some clicking if it is mounted rigidly in a case. I have used mine for TV recording under Vista Ultimate and it does this very well.
