excellent product - don't forget the power though!
operating system:
Windows VistaI bought these to put my old hard disk (IDE) into my new computer.
Please note that you still need to provide a power input to both this controller and the hard disk. My new power supply did not have a 4-pin MOLEX connector to power the hard disk so I had to buy another cable from EBuyer - Startech LP4 To SATA 15Pin Power Adapter F/M With Floppy Power, Item number 141089 - to achieve this.
Installation after that was really simple.
Very good price, kit and works well
operating system:
Windows XPBought this as I have two ide disk drives that serve me well, and dont want to upgrade just yet.
Added these to two dvd writer drives and had no problems under windows xp.
Cant comment on speed of reading or writing, but the drives work as well as they have done in the past.
The kit also comes with a power adapter and a SATA cable. Not a bad piece of kit for under a fiver!
If you dont fancy forking out for new kit, use your old stuff and add one of these, its only a fiver!
verey good
when you use this make sure your ide drive jumper is set to master.all cables are included , works at full speed converted and burnt in 35mins
Good Value Product
operating system:
Windows VistaBought to convert my old IDE drive to work in my new SATA only PC. Does the job well.
Whats not made clear from the description is that this device also claims on the packet to be able to convert an IDE socket on your old mainboard into a single SATA connector, so could also be useful for connecting a new SATA drive to an old mainboard.
Comes with an 18" SATA cable with 2 straight connectors and a IDE HDD type power plug to floppy drive type power connector converter cable. A splitter from IDE or SATA Power to Floppy/IDE might be more useful to include though, since you need both to power the drive with the adapter.
Work perfectly with optical drives; SATA cable is a bit short.
operating system:
Windows XPI use two of these for my PATA optical drives (DVD-RW and DVD/CD-RW).
The dongle is small enough to not over-hang the back of optical drives, but it would over-hang the back of a hard disk drive.
Each one comes with a 4-pin Molex to floppy power connector adapter and a SATA cable.
The power connector adapter was easy to use.
The SATA cable was too short for my full tower case; but I had others available.
No drivers are required and I was able to boot from both a Windows install CD and a bootable DVD.
I did not test this with a hard disk drive.
Good but lacks manual/instructions
operating system:
LinuxUpgrading my Linux server a figured buying a couple of these units would be a cheap way of reusing my old IDE drives.
Units are small and unintrusive (take up very little space once they are attached to the drive) however the workmanship looks a little shoddy for a SM board. Installing also means attaching two cables and isn't difficult but they won't work without attaching extra IDE power cables to the board which is a paint.. Fortunately I've spare power cables on the new PSU.
However I couldn't get either of them to work on 3 different SATA controllers on two PC's until it dawned on me that I was using ultra-IDE cabling and once I'd switched the hard-drives jumpers to primary every thing started to work.
Conclusion.. These units are a cheap way of reusing old IDE drives but the lack of any form of instructions is annoying and would have saved much time had they existed.
question
can you please advise what is included in this kit? i.e. what cables are supplied with the dongle?
